With the emergence of ingenious technologies, our lives are evolving rapidly, making it more harmonious, creating new avenues and changing the socio-economic landscape of the world. One such technology – the fifth-generation cellular network technology or ‘5G’, is set to transform the world through manifold improvements in speed, latency, throughput and reliability. 5G combined with IoT & smart silicon will become a powerful edge, driving advanced AI/ML to its zenith and a data-driven enterprise workflow will lead this transformation across consumers and industries alike, delivering real-time and reliable cloud-based connected experiences. 5G as technology will propel true transformation to “as a service” business models across industries such as manufacturing, transportation & logistics, health care, media, automotive and several others as well.

India is making massive investments to ensure advancements in the digital ecosystem and connectivity technologies such as 5G to reach across cities and villages. While consumers will gain from 5G’s high-speed data connectivity, it is the Internet of Things (IoT) that will drive the core of 5G businesses for Telcos. Smart factories, Smart cities, Smart homes, Connected farms, Connected cars and numerous such use cases across industries are going to bring billions of highly chatty devices & equipment onto the network, requiring extremely reliable network, data delivery mechanism and delivering high-density data traffic.

Talking about agriculture and livestock for instance. Connected animals & livestock will provide more real-time access to animals’ health, monitory tracking on their feed, maximizing yield and lifespan of the livestock. On the other hand, a smart farm will enable live tracking of soil nutrition, humidity, moisture content, weather pattern, etc. and make a data-driven irrigation and farming practices, maximizing the yield and quality of production. Optimizing water usage while increasing agricultural yield is a true requirement for India and 5G can empower it.

In the context of Smart Factories, with connected equipment, a smart supply chain and availability of data across the factory ecosystem, an AI-driven scheduling mechanism will enable automated scheduling of labour, equipment usage and on-time inventory procurement, maximising equipment utilisation & labour productivity while lowering inventory cost and optimizing energy consumption.

Another high impact use cases that can be enabled by 5G are connected and real-time traffic management. A connected, AI-based traffic management platform can potentially be the Smart command centre taking real-time decisions on routing and re-routing, traffic diversions, etc. delivering a direct impact on quality life for Indians. For instance, a connected traffic ecosystem can help schedule an ambulance through the most optimal route by enabling on-time traffic clearance, thereby saving lives.

On the consumer side, 5G will bring in the ability to stream true 4K and 8K content and provide outstanding AR/VR experience across multiple devices, delivering highly personalized media and content experiences.
