INDIA: The Rising Talent Capital Of The World
Blog: NASSCOM Official Blog
By 2030, India will be the largest workforce in the world with 90 million+ people.
Automation threatens 69% of the jobs in India.
What we need is large-scale reskilling reforms.
Government is stepping up to catalyse the training of their workforce
The Indian government has approved Rs 436 Cr for Future Skills PRIME to reskill Indian IT professionals.
“The more we give importance to skill development, the more competent will be our youth.”
-Narendra Modi, PM
Not just the government but isn’t reskilling the collective responsibility of the Government, Industry, Academia and the Citizens?
Citizens are currently facing ‘information’ and ‘financial’ challenges while keeping-up with the pace at which technological advances are creating new employment opportunities and displacing jobs.
Each individual citizen must engage in ‘life-long learning’ if they are to remain not just employable but to achieve fulfilling and rewarding careers that allow them to maximize their employment opportunities.
There are three main categories of learners who need to focus on keeping themselves up to date:
- Students: They need help to make informed decision about educational/job choice
- Job seekers: They need skills to boost their employability
- Employees: They need to upskill themselves for career development
Does India have the right reskilling infrastructure in place?
- India doubled budget allocation for Digital India program to $480 mn in 2018-19
- Niti Aayog partnered with Google to develop AI-based solutions
- Atal Tinkering Labs: NITI Aayog, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) in collaboration with NASSCOM launched an AI Base Module for 2.5 million students through AIM’s 5000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs). The content has been developed with inputs from industry members like Adobe, SAP Labs, Wipro, Tech M etc.
What is the roadmap to becoming ‘the talent capital of the world’?
Four key parties need to join hands to make ‘India’s reskilling story’, a success:
- Citizens: must engage in ‘life-long learning’ if they want rewarding careers
- Employers: must be prepared to ‘reskill’, ‘retrain’ and ‘upskill’ their employees
- Government: Campaigns like ‘Digital India’, ‘Make in India’ and ‘Start-up India’ will be crucial
- Academia: Need to shift our focus from ‘what we know’ to ‘what we can do with what we know’.
