How NIRAMAI is using AI to fight COVID-19 in India

Ever since COVID-19 went from being an ‘epidemic’ to a ‘pandemic’, countries all over the world have been looking for innovative solutions to tackle the virus. The importance of community screening can’t be emphasised enough; it is the first step towards slowing the spread of the disease.
Carriers of the virus show common symptoms like fever, dry throat, and possible sneezing, which are also seen in patients of seasonal flu. More rarely, the carrier might suffer from severe respiratory tract infection, and catch pneumonia in one or both lungs.
People may be infected with the virus for 1 to 14 days before they start to show any symptoms. In older people, especially those who have underlying medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease), are more vulnerable in becoming severely ill. This is why it is important to ensure community screening as much as possible.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised that all visitors to a hospital or any other institution must be passively screened for symptoms of fever and acute respiratory illness, before entering any facility. China has been particular in following this advisory and has seen great results in controlling the spread of the virus.
In India, airports, hospitals and other public places have adopted thermal screening using infrared forehead thermometers. This method to check temperatures of people is a good step, but at the same time, it is susceptible to manual errors. Moreover, it is time-consuming, and for a country like India that has a burgeoning population, this is not good enough.
