Zen and the Art of Digitization

Blog: Software AG Blog - Reality Check

SAG_LinkedIn_MEME_Zen_and_the_Art_of_DigitizationWe will soon reach the stage where everything is digitized. From manufacturing to motorcycles, to art and agriculture, every aspect of the world will have a digital form, physical and virtual

Soon the very word “digital” will be as redundant as the word “electric.” No one now says, “I’m going to switch on the electric lights;” we assume that the power source is electricity. And soon, we won’t need to specify that an organization has “gone digital” because it will be similarly assumed. In the same way that society “electrified” in the early 20th century we will have “digitized” in the first half of the 21st.

So far we’ve only seen the tip of the digital iceberg. You can ignore the pure digital disrupters – most existing companies are only just beginning to make the transformation, trying to ensure they remain relevant and competitive. They are some of the biggest companies on the planet and sit on a surging mass of digital information, flowing in and out as part of their business, yet are struggling to take advantage of it.

The IoT is the new force that is powering this process of digitization. But companies aren’t going to get anywhere with it if it’s viewed in isolation, in an IoT silo. A reading from a pressure sensor is somewhat interesting but when it’s combined with other pressure sensor data, reference data regarding that sensor and then analytics that feed into a process defining how the sensor is replaced, that’s where the real value lies. It is this “total” digitization of the physical and virtual worlds where exciting applications for the IoT lie and where existing business models will be disrupted and new ones born.

I playfully titled this blog “Zen and the Art of Digitization,” obviously as a reference to the well known, similarly titled book of the 1970s. As we explore the art of the possible with the IoT, we need to take a calm, considered, perhaps meditative, approach to its potential so we can take a truly holistic view of the digital universe. Zen-like.
