At the recently concluded TIBCO NOW conference, a powerful concept was introduced – the purpose of analytics is to augment intelligence and accelerate digital transformation. Even though the computers are becoming smarter everyday, we believe that the goal of cognitive computing shouldn’t be to replace humans but to augment the abilities that we already have, so that we can go from being good to great, and great to awesome! One of the ways for businesses to use cognitive computing is through effective use of graphics and visualizations. Graphics and visual methods have amazing power—they can change people’s minds, impact policies and even change the way to do business.
Amplify inherent abilities with a “bike”
There are many qualities that makes humans amazing among all of the living things. One of the key qualities is our ability to develop tools that allow us to achieve much more than what we could achieve with our inherent abilities. This capability has actually allowed us to survive, thrive and evolve even in severely adverse circumstances. A great example of this manifests itself everyday when we get up and walk. It turns out that human beings are not the most efficient in moving from one place to another. Among all the creatures on this planet, we rank about midway on the “energy efficiency” curve. To overcome this, we invented bicycle. It turns out that when we begin riding a bicycle, all of a sudden, we propel ourselves to the front of the pack in terms of energy efficiency.
Just like riding a bicycle, in order to become efficient in expressing ourselves, humans developed the concept of graphics and pictures many thousand years ago. The efficiency with which pictures convey information is captured in the idiom “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Graphics and visual methods are like a bike for our brains when we are trying to analyze a situation. Our brains can go further more efficiently, see things that it couldn’t see before, and ask questions that it didn’t know that they had to be asked.
