Towards a “No-Code” era: Reinventing Development

Blog: NASSCOM Official Blog

According to Gartner by 2024, low-code application development will be accountable for more than 65% of app development activity

In one of earlier articles we talked all about GPT-3, its capabilities and limitations. However, since the launch of OpenAI’s GPT-3 and its ability to even write a code in any language, we have been wondering – Will the latest AI kill coding? Not very long ago, researchers wondered whether AI would be able to write code by 2040. With GPT-3, machine-dominated coding is right here knocking at our doorstep.

Apart from the rapid advances in AI capabilities, there are other trends forcing people to think about programming jobs of the future – “No-Code/Low-code”

“No-code” refers to visual tools that make it easier for anyone to build new products, whether it is websites, designs, data analyses, or models. They enable companies and professionals with minimal or no coding experience to build apps. WordPress, Wix, and Shopify are good examples of no-code tools that enabled millions of people to do things on their own rather than hire a developer or a designer.

Advantages of low-code/no-code approach

– Enables faster development and subsequent deployment

– Amplifies developer capabilities and organizational agility

– Can substantially reduce development costs

The trend of low-code/no-code is not just restricted to DevOps but is increasingly also becoming a part of AI development with growing number of companies turning to no-code platforms for machine learning. Automation is increasingly coming for tasks data scientists perform with every major cloud vendor has heavily invested in some type of AutoML initiative or no/low-code AI platform.

The user is supposed to, just, feed in data, and the AutoML system automatically determines the approach that performs the best for the particular problem and builds an ML model.  It aims to automate the entire AI workflow.

My article on AutoML gives a brief of what it is, key market players and its advantages. It is a must read for a quick overview of AutoML.

Concluding Remarks

Low-Code/No-code tools are definitely the future, a simple drag and drop will let people create magic. In addition to faster development and deployment, low-code/no-code tools, allow non-technical professionals to take up development roles. As building things on the internet becomes easier and accessible, more people will become makers. It will also nudge medium-skilled coders to consider upgrading their skills, become experts in multiple low-code platforms, or evolve into niche citizen developers for a particular industry.
