TIBCO Supports Coding Education with Hour of Code

Students today often hear the phrase, “the job you will have hasn’t even been created yet” and in the technology industry, that couldn’t be truer. In fact, computing jobs are the top source of new wages in the United States. And according to Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org, “There’s not a single field, there’s not a single career, not a single area of academic study that’s not getting disrupted by computing and computer science.”
Even though 50,000 students graduate and enter the workforce with computer science degrees, there is a curriculum gap in building those skills in elementary, middle, and high school. Six out of ten schools fail to teach computer science even though it is a top interest of students and parents.
Hour of Code was started by Code.org as a one-hour introduction to computer science for students in elementary, middle, and high school. It is designed to demystify “coding” to show that anybody can learn the basics and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, always starting with one-hour coding activities for students and expanding to all sorts of community efforts.
Top technology companies have partnered with Code.org to host Hour of Code events around the world. TIBCO, alongside other Denver-based Vista companies — Vertafore, Granicus, Ping, and Four Winds Interactive — have started to host Hour of Code events for students on their campuses.
TIBCO successfully hosted its first Hour of Code event in Denver on February 25, 2020, for middle school students from Denver Center for International Studies at Montbello, a local school for students in grades 6-12. Students got to learn and actually code their own dance party (the given use case) in addition to touring the TIBCO Denver offices to learn about the different roles at a technology company and hear from Shawn Rogers, Senior Director at TIBCO. Several of the students who participated made connections to what they were doing in their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) classes with what they did and saw at TIBCO. In fact, when you asked the students themselves, many would recommend this program to other students.
TIBCO hopes to continue partnering with local school districts around Denver to host Hour of Code events on a quarterly basis as a way to reach out to young students who are interested in and want to learn about careers in technology.
