TIBCO Spotfire and Jaspersoft Highlighted in Eckerson Group’s “The Cloud BI Landscape” Report

One of the greatest benefits of cloud business intelligence (BI) tools is how they enable business analysts and other business users to explore data on their own and make correlations between data sets without having to rely on IT to generate reports or to develop a custom data mart.
TIBCO’s Spotfire Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Jaspersoft Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) BI tools earned special recognition for these and other capabilities in Eckerson Group’s latest report, “The Cloud BI Landscape: Product Categories and Positioning” The report, co-authored by Eckerson Group Founder and Principal Consultant Wayne Eckerson and Chor-Ching Fan, Principal Consultant at Marketlocity, evaluated more than a dozen cloud BI solutions available on the market today based on key attributes such as target audience, architecture, vendor role, and pricing.
Eckerson Group had several favorable things to say about the Spotfire and Jaspersoft BI product suites. Within the SaaS BI category, Eckerson notes that “SaaS BI offerings are inherently self-service. They cater to buyers who want to consume or create reports without having to rely on IT for help…Many SaaS BI products support data discovery. These cloud-based products, such as TIBCO Spotfire Cloud…empower business analysts to access, combine, analyze, visualize, and share data and insights without having to request data sets from IT or wait for them to prepare a relevant data mart or semantic layer.”
PaaS BI services noted in the Eckerson Group report, “target BI developers and administrators who need to build and manage BI solutions or environments for hundreds or thousands of business users.” In addition, “the Do It Yourself (DIY) segment in the PaaS BI market consists of BI products (such as Jaspersoft) that customers can rent and use on commercial cloud marketplaces, such as Amazon’s AWS Marketplace, Rackspace, and Microsoft Azure. For example, developers can rent TIBCO Jaspersoft for AWS, a server-based tool for creating interactive reports and dashboards, for as little as $0.48 an hour with no data or user limits or additional fees,” according to the Eckerson Group report.
The report goes on to point out that DIY software typically runs in a single tenant instance “since users configure the software to run on a virtual instance they create. However, some vendors also offer multi-tenant versions in cloud marketplaces. For instance, TIBCO sells a multi-tenant version of Jaspersoft on the AWS Marketplace that is designed for customers who want to embed Jaspersoft reports into their own multi-tenant cloud applications.”
