Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Races to Data-driven Decisions
Blog: The Tibco Blog
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team has won the last three FIA World championships and Formula One Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships (respectively awarded to the most successful car manufacturer and driver based on points earned in 20 Grand Prix races). Earlier this year, the team formed a partnership with TIBCO which included use of the TIBCO Insight Platform.
“Our goal is to win more world championships,” says Matt Harris, head of IT. “During qualifying, we have about a minute to turn the car around and refuel. For a car 100 yards out coming into the pit at 60 miles an hour, you try to do the mobile handshake, offload the data, and get it to 60 sets of eyes at the track and another 30 to 40 in the factory in as close to real time as possible—the idea being that we’re hopefully always ahead of the game with data-driven decisions. Every decision we make is based on data.”
For an insider’s view of running IT for a winning Formula One team, which might be summed up as capturing and analyzing data from the Internet of Things while racing 20 others like you at 200 mph, check out:
