Government Customers Take Center Stage at AppianGovernment 2020 Live

At AppianGovernment, a record number of government customers and partners participated in 49 sessions with government executives, Appian technology experts, and partners. Leaders from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Marine Corps, Health Canada, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Department of Education, and other innovative organizations described how low-code automation is accelerating and simplifying the modernization of their mission systems.
The global government community celebrated an increasing number of enterprise low-code automation successes and growing adoption of the Appian platform. Speakers shared how their agencies quickly deployed innovative case management, workflow, automation, and secure cloud solutions to address their specific needs. Attendees also learned what’s next in hyperautomation from Appian CEO Matt Calkins and Chief Technology Officer and Founder Mike Beckley.
Appian experts from Product, Government and Customer Success teams shared their tips, tricks and secrets to success, as well as exclusive demos of the latest digital transformation solutions. This year’s virtual format delivered an interactive, live experience that included an Expert Studio and live demos with Q&A. Appian and our partners presented new government applications and technology demonstrations at sessions including:

Federal Civilian Customer Panel: Accelerating Modernization and Improving Customer Experience
Natalie Carey (Appian, Industry Lead, Federal Civilian) led a panel with Yvette Bryant (Department of Education), Edward Dowgiallo (Department of Transportation) and Matthew Miller (General Services Administration). These federal executives discussed challenges and highlights from 2020, like the need to pivot to a completely remote workforce and how they are improving the user experience and citizen experience.
Miller shared how Appian cloud applications helped the General Services Administration (GSA) prepare for the pandemic by supporting remote workers and telework. GSA has been very productive in a remote working environment, increasing the number of contract transactions the organization processed, for example.
Bryant talked about how Appian simplifies processes and improves the user experience at the Department of Education–improving workflow, automating manual processes, and unifying data across legacy systems. At the Department of Transportation (DOT), Appian has been essential in improving citizen experience, Dowgiallo said. Stakeholders have access to required information, better personalization, and automated notifications. DOT staff can focus on higher-value work because of automation.
Department of Defense Customer Panel: Modernizing the Mission in 2020 and 2021
The Department of Defense (DoD) accelerated its modernization plans by adopting faster, more automated development, testing, and deployment platforms. Ray Wulff, (Appian, Industry Lead, Global Defense Programs) moderated a panel with Dave DiEugenio (Marine Corps Recruiting Command), Craig Lawrence (Naval Supply Systems Command), and Bryant Stevens (Robins Air Force Base). The panel discussed low code automation applications in the DoD and how the mission’s modernization is happening today. Speakers described their experiences modernizing systems and upgrading skill sets to meet changing mission requirements.
Panelists explained how they are quickly developing, deploying, and scaling Appian applications. Robins AFB has developed and deployed more than 50 Appian applications, for example, and more than 6,000 Marine recruiters are relying on Appian applications developed by the Marine Corps Recruiting Command. Speakers also discussed how the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force are planning to deploy secure Appian mobile apps in 2021. Appian, in cooperation with Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and the Marine Corps, supports mobile access to applications within the Department of Defense Information Network (DODIN).
Panelists said that their organizations are planning wider adoption of robotic process automation (RPA) and other automation technologies in 2021 and that Appian increases productivity by automating manual processes. Automation technologies allow service members to focus on higher value work. Finally, speakers shared how Appian is helping their organizations improve decision-making in defense recruiting, logistics, and procurement through the improved availability of data.
Public Health Customer Panel: Managing Complex Regulatory Processes in an Agile Environment
2020 has forced public health agencies to use all of the tools at their disposal to combat COVID-19 and rapidly adapt to a changing and dynamic regulatory environment. Jason Adolf (Appian, Industry Vice President, Global Public Sector) moderated a session with Nick Karitsiotis (Health Canada), John Quinn (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency), and Sean Wybenga (Food and Drug Administration). Panelists discussed how they are using Agile and Appian to build mission-critical public health applications.
Quinn talked about how the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) used Appian to develop and deploy its COVID-19 citizen contact center and case management applications. The low-code automation platform enables the MHRA to quickly develop applications that meet the agency’s unique needs.
In the first year since deploying its Appian environment, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has implemented five cloud-based regulatory review applications for managing critical regulatory review activities, Wybenga said. In just a year, the agency has completed more than 900 initial safety assessments for Investigational New Drug products and entered and managed more than 300 safety signals.
Health Canada is also using Appian for managing drug submissions. Health Canada selected Appian to replace its legacy systems because of the platform’s ability to quickly develop applications that meet their specific needs. Appian allows the organization to build scalable enterprise applications and plays a vital role in the organization’s Agile software development.
