“By learning from each other, we can erase stigma and stereotypes”: Asian Heritage Month Q&A with Chris Tran

Blog: The Tibco Blog

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As a part of TIBCO’s Diversity & Inclusion initiative for the month of May, we are spotlighting employees of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage, asking them what makes them proud of their heritage and what they plan to do to embrace their identity in the future.

TIBCO: Tell us about yourself.

My name is Chris Tran, and I’ve been a University Recruiter for TIBCO for five years, working out of the company’s Palo Alto HQ, CA office and more recently my home office in Daly City, CA.

TIBCO: This year’s Asian Heritage Month celebrates the culture, traditions, and history of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States and beyond. What is your Asian heritage?

Chris Tran: I am Vietnamese.

TIBCO: What about your culture are you most proud of?

CT: I am most proud of our New Year’s tradition, from the things we should or should not do, to the attire that everyone dresses up in, to the celebrations we have.

TIBCO: In what ways do you feel the Asian communities have helped shape the world?

CT: One way the Asian communities have shaped the world is with various cuisines that people worldwide enjoy eating.

TIBCO: What does being a part of the Asian community mean to you?

CT: For me, being a part of the Asian community means we are a family that has many different traditions. We share some similarities, but we also have cultural differences that make us each unique.

TIBCO: What are the benefits to celebrating our shared history and cultures throughout TIBCO?

CT: The benefit is to understand one another better so we can build and maintain relationships. By learning from each other, we can erase some stigma and stereotypes.

TIBCO: What is an Asian tradition that your parents have passed down to you that you wish to pass down?

CT: A tradition I would like to pass down is bringing rice and stepping over water when entering a new home. This tradition brings peace and prosperity to the house.
