BPM and Healthcare
Blog: AuraQuantic Blog
Business Process Management (BPM) is undoubtedly beneficial to all types of organizations. Healthcare is no exception; on the contrary, it is perhaps one of the areas that could benefit most from process management.
The different entities involved in the healthcare sector perform tasks which are directly linked to legislation, public administration, etc. which amount to a vast number of activities and an immense workflow. If the management of the internal (between departments) and external tasks (public administrations, pharmaceutical companies, etc.) is not automated or flexible, these entities could become chaotic and as a result, patient care becomes slow and inefficient.
Process management makes patient care more efficient and reduces waiting times.
Furthermore, it provides the following benefits:
- Increased productivity among hospital staff.
- Reduced administrative workload.
- Secure document management and an end to hard copies.
- Automated ordering system for material requirements.
- Complete and up-to-date regulatory compliance.
Thus, many health organizations worldwide rely on BPM solutions to perform tasks, such as:
- Patient Scheduling
- Nurse Placements
- HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance
- eMedical Reports
- Form Creation
- Document approvals
However, despite the numerous advantages an iBPMS system can offer this sector, recent studies have revealed that ‘Public sector and Healthcare’ is the industry with the lowest Business Process Management maturity:
Taking into account all the advantages of integrating a BPM system in healthcare management, the use of BPM in this sector will certainly increase. Public investment in healthcare has been cut due to the economic crisis; however investment in iBPMS would reduce costs and improve effectiveness and efficiency in this sector.
