App Platforms Key as Demand for Enterprise Apps Outpacing Development Capacity

Blog: Appian Insight

The rapid rise of the enterprise mobility movement has left IT departments scrambling with an overwhelming demand for new apps and services. Application development platforms are becoming more important than ever in this climate, with solutions that can align apps and business processes being especially vital. Business process management solutions are evolving to meet these needs by incorporating low-code development platforms into the BPM suite. The result is an environment in which non-tech users can create or customize apps, something that is increasingly important as IT departments strive to keep up with rising proprietary app development trends.

A recent article on the Smarter with Gartner blog explained that enterprise app development innovation will be key over the next few years as IT teams try to keep up with the rising demand created by mobility strategies.

Looking at the changing enterprise development ecosystem
Gartner found that the Internet of Things is driving mobile engagement through the roof. As organizations become more dependent on the IoT as part of their operations, businesses will be ramping up app use to support their operations. At this point, the research firm estimates that the average enterprise employee uses approximately three different mobile apps daily. As companies roll out more IoT solutions, that figure will rise to six apps being used on a day-to-day basis.

According to Gartner, demand for mobile app development services in enterprise IT departments will outpace delivery capabilities by IT teams by 2017’s culmination. This is creating an environment in which IT departments will be scrambling to accelerate their app development capabilities.  Adrian Leow, principal research analyst at Gartner, explained that many organizations are in a situation where they need to make dramatic improvements to their ability to ramp up app development.

“This is an indication of the nascent state of mobility in most organizations, with many questioning how to start app development in terms of tools, vendors, architectures or platforms, let alone being able to scale up to releasing 100 apps or more,” said Leow.

BPM can hold the key to keeping up with enterprise app demands
Even if IT teams can increase their app production and outsource some dev tasks, they will need to ensure that apps are properly targeted to meet end-user needs. This is where low-code dev tools become so beneficial. Letting your business users create the apps they need can not only have a huge impact on your ability to deliver a large quantity of apps, it can also ensure those solutions actually meet operational requirements. BPM tools make this possible through dedicate mobile application development platforms within the BPM suite.
