#4 Debunking myths: Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Blog: AuraQuantic Blog
The growing demand to increase labor productivity has expedited development of the Cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI), among other technologies. Although, the great protagonist of the current technological world is AI, since, without it, many automatic processes that we enjoy today would not be possible.
However, like any other technology, its rise in popularity has led to misconceptions that need to be corrected, urban legends, and other myths that turn out to be false. Therefore, in this article we are going to try to shed a little light and demystify the false beliefs that revolve around Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is undoubtedly the present and the future of technology. But what exactly does this technology consist of and how does it influence our lives? Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a machine to simulate the same capabilities as human beings, such as reasoning, learning, creativity and the ability to plan. It allows technological systems to perceive their environment, relate to it, solve problems and act with a specific objective. The machine receives data, processes it, and responds to it.
Artificial Intelligence systems are capable of adapting their behavior to a certain extent, analyzing the effects of actions and working autonomously. Technological advancements, the availability of huge amounts of data, and new algorithms have enabled significant advancements in AI in recent years. Thus, today we find countless applications of Artificial Intelligence in our day to day, such as:
- Internet shopping and web searches
AI is used to create personalized recommendations for consumers based, for example, on their previous searches and purchases or other online behaviors. In addition, search engines memorize the data that users provide to provide relevant search results.
- Personal digital assistants
Smartphones use Artificial Intelligence to offer a product that is as personalized as possible. The use of virtual assistants or chatbots that answer questions, give recommendations and help organize their owners’ routines is increasingly common.
- Smart houses and cities
All homes are technologically advancing in leaps and bounds. AI allows creating an intelligent environment capable of perceiving what is happening inside and outside through sensors that detect and act, depending on the instance that is registered, such as opening and closing doors and windows, turning lights off or on, lowering or raise blinds, controlling heating, etc.
- Cybersecurity
Artificial Intelligence systems make it possible to recognize and fight against cyberattacks and other online threats based on the data they continuously receive, recognizing patterns and preventing attacks.
- Fight Fake News
Some AI applications detect fake news by extracting information from social media, searching for sensational or alarming words, and identifying which online sources are authorized and which are not.
Debunking myths about Artificial Intelligence
Although Artificial Intelligence has many applications for day-to-day use, there are also many people who object to its usage. From this confusion a series of false beliefs have arisen around AI that we have listed below:
Myth 1. AI will replace work done by humans and people will lose their jobs
FALSE. In general, technology is not created to replace human capacity, but to complement it. In the same way, AI will increase the way people complete their work on tasks such as extracting and analyzing data to streamline decision-making in real time. Thus, employees will be able to focus on tasks that require human intervention.
Myth 2. AI is only accessible to large organizations with many resources
FALSE. There is a belief, especially among small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), that Artificial Intelligence can only be implemented by large organizations. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest myths, as there are more and more accessible, powerful and affordable tools and techniques that can help improve the performance of any business, regardless of size.
Myth 3. AI technologies are difficult to adopt because they are so complex
FALSE. The wide range of options that currently exist to implement Artificial Intelligence systems makes this extremely easy and profitable for any organization. A reasonable investment to get the most out of your benefits. Also, contrary to what many people think, the difficulty is in the change of mindset from an expert-based to a much more dynamic and learning-oriented attitude.
Myth 4. Data can make AI even smarter than humans.
FALSE. Artificial Intelligence can be as smart as we program it, but what is clear is that, without humans, there would be no AI. AI technology is not capable of creating itself, motivating itself or drawing conclusions on its own. Therefore, without humans awareness and understanding, AI cannot be useful.
Myth 5. The more data we have at our disposal, the better AI will work.
FALSE. It is not necessary to store large amounts of data to achieve the best Artificial Intelligence, the important thing is to have quality, relevant data and diversity. The same example of data repeated a thousand times does not improve the accuracy of a predictive model such as AI.
False beliefs about future AI should not influence our opinion. Current AI has multiple advantages and exists to improve all areas of life, especially work. At AURA, we hope that this article will help to clear up your doubts regarding this technology, and it’s worth remembering that the purpose of Artificial Intelligence is to to free us from repetitive tasks and allow us to dedicate our time to what really matters.
