What’s New and What’s Next: 2022 Formula One Season

The new W13 Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One car was unveiled on February 18 and with it the promise of another action-packed Formula One season. TIBCO fans watched the Team reveal its new car as enthusiasm zoomed through the screen.
During its partnership with TIBCO, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has amassed 60 race wins—including Eight Constructors’ and Seven Drivers’ championships—and operationalized turning data into insight that informs car design, race strategy, and driver performance. Will the Team repeat as Constructor’s champion in 2022? We certainly think so. Here’s what’s new and what’s next in Formula One.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Looks to Attack
Following six years of hybrid-powered dominance from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, and record-setting wins from Sir Lewis Hamilton, the 2022 Formula One season will see tighter cost caps, new car designs, and increased competition. Mercedes-AMG Petronas is undeterred.
Eager for a record-breaking eighth title, Hamilton stated at the W13 launch, “If you think what you saw at the end of the last year was my best, wait to see this year.”
Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff added, “It’s attack mode.”
Miami Joins the Party
Fueled in part by the popularity of Netflix’s Drive to Survive, plus ESPN securing television rights, Formula One is experiencing massive fan growth in America. The US will host two F1 Grand Prix this year: in Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida. But make no mistake, Formula One is global. The F1 2022 calendar includes 23 races set across five continents.
Intense Driver Battles
Most eyes will be fixed on the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to start the season. But there are plenty of other storylines to capture fans’ attention. The highly touted George Russell will now be racing with the Mercedes team, alongside Hamilton.
Valtteri Bottas, formerly with Mercedes, will now be driving for Alfa Romeo. Bottas’ teammate is rookie Guanyu Zhou, the first full-time F1 driver from China. Other young drivers, including Lando Norris and Esteban Ocon, will no doubt make their presence felt on track as they seek to stand atop the podium.
More Overtakes
Formula One cars are so fast—reaching speeds of nearly 400KPH—that during the turbo-hybrid era, there was a concerted effort to slow them down to make them safer. The 2022 new F1 rules are focused not on speeding them up, per se, but on making it easier for cars to overtake.
New tires, new aerodynamic regulations, and modifications of the front and rear wings mean that races should feature more intense competition with drivers battling for position from start to finish.
Sustainability
As part of Formula One’s commitment to sustainability, F1 will increase the biofuels ratio of its fuels to 10 percent with plans to introduce a fully sustainable fuel over the next few years. An increase in standardized parts for all teams, plus efforts by the teams to reduce waste on and off-track, are all part of F1’s aim to be net-zero carbon by 2030.
