What is a Cross-Functional Process?

When we speak of transverse processes doubt whether it is a type of process or a methodology is, let’s see how their impact within an organization.

What is a Cross-Functional Process?

In previous post we treat what is BPM and what it does, we also discuss how to define a process, however when it comes to transverse processes doubt whether it is a type of process or a methodology, however these processes are those that break the silos scheme, achieving encompass the entire business structure, making use of technology as a means of automation and reducing effort.

Companies are structured by organizational areas, which are vertical and perform various functions, such as financial human resources, manufacturing, sales and marketing, etc. These organizations have access to infrastructure services companies, such as databases, portals, applications and services SOA (service-oriented architecture), IDRS (recovery systems Integrated Data), LDAP protocol (Lightweight Directory Access) EAI (enterprise application integration), email and other IT operations that support each of the organizations.

But often, the processes that are the real value in the company (main processes) are precisely those that span multiple organizational areas, IT systems and applications. Most of the time the processes are divided when there are transfers between departments, because once a process is transferred to the next department, it is difficult to track and manage.

Therefore, an organization requires a more holistic and comprehensive to define and manage their business processes form in which the business process is seen as an organizational entity that encompasses areas, and managed as a single process rather than a set of tasks in individual organizations.

As noted in the picture, there are different organizational areas within the same company, but a process “x” which encompasses several of them, the purpose of the transverse processes is traveling through areas that are necessary from start to finish, and this way to have control over the performance of the organization.

Business Process Management (BPM) is a form-focused consulting business process, in contrast to a functional or organizational view thereof; is an enterprise-wide strategy that connects people, systems and applications. Looking to automate, manage and optimize dynamic business processes that span organizations, systems and applications to create real business value

The picture shows a sample process (sales quotation process) and shows how each of the tasks in the process interact with several units of the vertical organization (Operations, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing and Human Resources) and infrastructure services companies that support these organizational units. Human interactions are treated in such a splendid way interactions at the systems level.

BPM systems using these process diagrams and applications become executable process without imposing changes in the underlying systems, providing the business agility to change quickly to business conditions. It also offers the advantage of modeling explicit processes (process visualization), in order to share business knowledge of the entire business process. This is essential to improve the process.
