Top Technology Trends 2022

Every year the world of technology advances a step further, in favor of offering a wide range of products and solutions, designed to satisfy the increasing market demands, from both consumers and from companies in different sectors.

Digital transformation and digitization of companies and public and private institutions, as well as of society as a whole, is an unstoppable phenomenon that will bring about important improvements, for example, in the provision of essential services, connectivity for the population, the productive cycle and supply chains, etc.

However, the economic crisis derived from COVID-19 has paralyzed the evolution of these transformative processes in some organizations, in addition to leading to the closure of many companies, especially SMEs, as a result of the paralysis of numerous production and supply chains or the fall in demand for certain goods and services.

Faced with this situation, the availability of different financing mechanisms aimed at satisfying companies’ technological investment needs is essential to get world economic growth back on track. Advantages that will be particularly leveraged by countries with large fiber optic deployments, such as North America, East Asia and Europe.

1. Remote and hybrid work

Remote and hybrid work are here to stay. According to the recent report published by the technology consultancy Forrester that includes its predictions for 2022, it is estimated that 10% of companies will commit to a fully remote future, while 60% will opt for a hybrid model.

However, this same report echoes the resistance to change shown by the leaders of many organizations when facing these new forms of employment. Proof of this can be found in the fact that meetings, jobs and promotion opportunities continue to follow the in-office model.

On the other hand, the document confirms that the remaining 30% of organizations that continue to opt for purely in-office models, will suffer significant wear and tear, to such an extent that the monthly quit rates by their workforce will increase to 2.5% during 2022.

Thus, leaders of the companies must commit and do everything in their power to make remote a reality.

2. Artificial Intelligence

Amsterdam-based technology consultancy, BearingPoint, recently published a report on the top five technology trends for 2022, in which responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) ranks first among its ‘top five’.

The maturity of AI requires a degree of involvement that goes beyond the pure technical development of this technology trend. Now, business IT teams must integrate the principles of ethics and responsibility, in the development of all phases of an AI project.

In this sense, the EU has published a framework of good practices, called White Paper on Artificial Intelligence: a European approach to excellence and trust. In this document, the European Commission proposes a common regulatory framework that guarantees the development and application of AI systems, based on ethical, impartial, transparent, safe criteria and always under human control. In addition, this document establishes a classification of AI systems, taking into account the level of risk, which can be unacceptable, high, low and minimal.

3. 5G technology

If we look back, many will remember how at the end of 2019, many media specialists in technology and companies, echoed one of the main technology trends that would mark the second decade of 2000, the deployment of 5G.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic frustrated the wishes of all those who had pinned their hopes on the opportunities that this new communication standard would bring.

Thus, we will have to wait until 2022 so that, once again, the voices of numerous technology experts and leaders of technological organizations can be heard again, announcing that this is the year we expect to surpass the level of 1 billion global subscribers to 5G, according to the publication ‘The Ericsson Mobility Report‘.

5G represents an opportunity, for companies and society as a whole. The benefits of this technology trend are diverse and very different: very high-speed mobile broadband, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, higher levels of network security, the ability to manage millions of devices simultaneously and in real time, the expansion speed and coverage levels, broadband in rural areas…

Advantages that will be especially leveraged by countries with large fiber optic deployments, such as Spain, which currently occupies the third position in the world ranking.

4. Low-code solutions

Low-code platforms have democratized access to business-level technology, making it possible for any organization, regardless of its size, activity or the level of digital skill possessed by employees, to collaborate with application development and hereby accelerate digital transformation and the digitization process.

The results of this technology trend are clearly evident: increased productivity and competitiveness, as well as greater speed, flexibility, scalability and the possibility of automating and integrating with other platforms and software.

Undoubtedly, this technology represents a great help both for companies that have IT teams, since it facilitates the development of applications, and also for companies that, although they do not have these departments or highly qualified personnel, want to develop customized applications in an agile, fast and intuitive way.

5. Hyperautomation

Hyperautomation is the natural evolution of process automation, the latter being described as the mechanization of all manual and repetitive tasks, previously consuming a lot of employee time and effort.

This technology trend, which is expected to have a high degree of adoption by organizations worldwide in the coming years, enables the automation of business processes using a combination of different advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotic Process Automation (RPA).

The results derived from the implementation of this technology are evident: reduction of times in the production cycle, elimination of manual processes, improvements in decision-making, elimination of human errors, reduction in operating costs, increased productivity and competitiveness of the organization and increased employee satisfaction by having to perform tasks of greater value to the organization.

6. Cybersecurity mesh

The growing demands of organizations to improve their levels of cybersecurity, in the face of possible cyberattacks, the increase in cloud services and remote work have been determining factors in the development and implementation of this new technological trend: the cybersecurity mesh.

A cybersecurity mesh allows the extension of the security perimeter that protects an organization or, in other words, consists of the design of an infrastructure that enables the definition of a security perimeter, around an individual (employee, client or partner ) that operates remotely, a thing (cloud) or entity (company), for scalable, flexible and reliable cybersecurity control.

7. Internet of behavior (IoB)

IoB makes it possible to identify the life habits and behaviors of individuals, to offer them segmented and personalized solutions that can influence their decisions.

For this, IoB uses a combination of different technologies created to collect information from users – such as location, facial recognition, monitoring of physical activity, use of social networks or purchases made – and their interrelation, with the intention to offer a solution to the user that determines behavior.

However, at this point, it is worth remembering the possible ethical and social implications derived from the collection, storage and use of this data by companies. An issue that also involves legal and security risks related to the users’ right to privacy.

8. Total Experience (TX)

Total Experience is the sum of Customer Experience (CX), Employee Experience (EX), User Experience (UX), and Multi Experience (MX).

The result of this operation guarantees an improvement of the different experiences that occur within an organization, to achieve a transformative business result. In other words, it involves using technology to break down the existing silos between the different departments of the same organization, integrating their functions, to improve end-customer satisfaction.

9. Smart infrastructure

Smart infrastructure is another of the technology trends that Forrester mentions in its report entitled ‘Predictions 2022’.

The document confirms the importance of investing in the Internet of Things (IoT) and in advanced networks such as 5G to empower the development of smart and connected ports, roads and trains.

A technology trend that economies such as the US, China and Europe are investing in, reflected by their infrastructure program investments planned for the coming years.

The objective of smart infrastructure is to create smart cities, based on the application of information and communication technologies (ICT), in different infrastructures and services (buildings, energy services, water, waste management, mobility …).

10. Native cloud

Native cloud is based on a software architecture that allows you to develop applications directly in the cloud. The three main advantages that emerge from this technology are: scalability, flexibility and agility in the development process. Three benefits that currently represent an important competitive advantage for organizations since they allow them to be much more resilient.

For now, many technology consulting firms confirm that the future of software development must pass through the native cloud, especially considering that more and more companies are beginning to automate their internal and external processes, which require technology that can effectively guarantee the operability and security.
