Reading Time: 2 minutes

Announcing the new Mod of the Month program! This blog series will highlight some of the amazing work of the Spotfire visual analytics community in creating custom analytics applications using TIBCO Spotfire® Mods.

TIBCO Spotfire Mods are innovative “grab and go” custom visualization and analytics apps that leverage the power of Spotfire for a seamless, fit-for-purpose analytics experience. The Mods cloud-enabled framework makes it easy for anyone to build, share, and use.

Harnessing the creativity of the Spotfire community

The best part of Spotfire Mods? It taps into the creativity of the analytics community, empowering community developers to add custom features to data visualizations inside the platform. If you can dream it, you can make it happen with Spotfire Mods. Customers, partners, and third-party developers can use Mods to easily build and distribute new visualizations, greatly expanding the breadth and depth of types of visualizations available to the community.

This month’s new Mod in action

To kick off the Mod of the Month program, TIBCO is excited to share the work of Tobias Lehtipalo, Olof Bjerke, and Erik Brandin with the new Animated Bubble Chart Mod. This Mod, now available to the Spotfire analytics community on the Mods Marketplace, animates data in real time and allows viewers to observe trends at a high level.

It can be used to show how two to four measures change over time through an in-motion data visualization. Let’s look at an example of how this Mod can be used to plot the life expectancy of countries compared to their GDP, animated over time, in the gif below.

Animated Bubble Chart Mod plotting life expectancy of countries from 1943 to 1947

In this example, the Animated Bubble Chart Mod highlights changes in life expectancy in the United States, France, United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan, leading up to, during, and after World War II. The Mod visually represents how all these countries saw a rise in life expectancy up until 1941 but plummets in the following years up until 1946 when it begins to gradually rise again.

Applications for your business

This method of visualizing changes over time can be applied to answer a wide range of business questions. What is the relationship between worldwide vaccinations administered (percent of population) and new cases (per 100K population)? How do employees’ career paths change over time as new skills develop and they gain broader industry expertise? What trends appear in IoT readings over time?

An animated bubble chart can be helpful in answering these questions and determining the next best steps for your business. For more information on how to apply this Mod of the Month, check out the TIBCO community page.
