TIBCO Spotfire Achieves Certified Integration with SAP HANA
Blog: The Tibco Blog
March 2016 has been a very exciting month for TIBCO Spotfire. On Monday, March 24, we were excited to announce Spotfire 7.5’s certification on SAP HANA. Here we will discuss SAP HANA from the Spotfire users’ perspective and what the certification means for you.
SAP HANA self-service visual data discovery
Self-service access to SAP HANA was introduced back in October 2013 with Spotfire 6.0. Since then, the interest from our customers has been huge, making SAP HANA one of the most popular data sources for in-datasource visual data discovery. It’s a natural fit, as SAP HANA data is designed for and is used with very large data sets, making it a good strategy to leave data in SAP HANA, avoiding heavy data transfers and letting SAP HANA’s in-memory query engine do the heavy lifting.
One of the most common scenarios we see is organizations transitioning from SAP BW to SAP HANA. SAP HANA’s faster query engine and better adaptation for integration with tools like Spotfire significantly speeds up analytics. SAP enables this by supporting migration from BEx queries to SAP HANA Analytical views, both supported natively by Spotfire.
A new connector
We decided that our SAP HANA connector deserved a complete overhaul for Spotfire 7.5 and the certification. This allowed us to improve performance, especially around metadata handling, and users to gain instant access to SAP HANA parameters from within Spotfire. Our new connectivity option adapted to Information Views makes it easier to connect to views and Spotfire becomes aware that views are used and adapts the user experience to these SAP HANA’s cubes.
Several of our customers use a single SAP HANA cluster across multiple countries while still providing localized data by using SAP HANA’s text joins. Spotfire’s integration makes it easy to select language from within the analysis.
Other new features are support for column descriptions and attribute views, and the option to manually define primary key columns. Custom SAP HANA SQL queries and custom prompting and relations are popular features that are already supported.
SAP certified
Spotfire 7.5’s new connector also enabled our customers to deploy a certified integration. We have been working closely with SAP HANA’s product management and certification teams to ensure that the extensive list of requirements, and more, are met:
- Support for single sign on with Kerberos
- Support for analytical, calculation, and attribute views
- Support for information views parameters (automatically connected to Spotfire prompts)
- Support for column based tables
- Support for row based tables
- Support for Hierarchies
- Support for query logging and application specific updates of the M_SESSION_CONTEXT table
- Support for SAP HANA error messages
- Support for row level security through SAP HANA Analytic Privileges
- Support for turning off caching in Spotfire
The certification acknowledges that SAP has proven Spotfire’s integration to be more than just SQL statements. It proves SAP HANA’s market presence and our ambition to continue to provide a market leading Spotfire integration.
