TIBCO Customers Achieve Excellent Business Results with IoT

In a previous blog, I outlined how the open-source Project Flogo® can be used to help you take action more quickly on valuable IoT data by moving processing closer to the source. And that it builds event-driven apps that are very lightweight, which are perfectly suited for small IoT and edge devices. Many organizations are thus using Project Flogo to support their IoT use cases today.
Flogo helps Cargosmart plan for disruptions in shipping
For example, CargoSmart’s customers were demanding greater visibility and performance during the shipping process. TIBCO helped CargoSmart implement a solution that analyzed large volumes of data in real time to improve their decision making and plan for potential disruptions. They deployed Flogo applications to integrate a mix of data across various services, platforms, and IoT devices. With this solution in place to help them analyze the speeds and routes of vessels, CargoSmart was able to cut fuel consumption by 3.5%.
Further, because Flogo allows developers to easily embed machine learning models, CargoSmart was able to apply artificial intelligence to their IoT data to augment their decision making and create better experiences for their customers. So for example, medical supply manufacturers need to know that certain supplies they ship are continually refrigerated. Now, if conditions change, IoT temperature sensors can raise events that can be alerted on and visualized for those manufacturers in real time.
Flogo helps Thingstream embed apps on low power devices
Because they are small in size, applications written with Project Flogo use compute resources very efficiently. This allows these applications to be deployed to devices that have limited memory capacity, such as edge devices. Further, these applications also use processors very efficiently, which of course is critical for IoT environments where devices have smaller power supplies, such as batteries.
TIBCO customer ThingStream, for example, connects and collects data from multiple IoT devices – such as vibrations, temperature, and humidity – and makes it available for processing and analyzing in order for its customers to take actions or make business decisions. In some cases, these devices can remain in the field for as long as a decade, and can endure brutal environmental conditions. Regardless, they need power to consistently send and receive messages.
To meet these strict requirements, ThingStream turned to TIBCO to help implement a solution that included Flogo to quickly integrate all of their IoT devices so that they can send and receive messages from them. The small, efficient, and platform-independent applications created by Flogo helped ThingStream create entirely new value for its customers. For instance, with the help of TIBCO, Thingstream customers can now easily bridge the gap between devices deployed on the edge and their other resources so they have access to their IoT data in real-time to make proactive decisions.
Project Flogo is available for all developers to download and use at no charge. TIBCO has commercialized Project Flogo within our TIBCO Cloud Integration and TIBCO Flogo Enterprise offerings, which not only include commercial technical support and support for a wide variety of enterprise connectors, but also many productivity features that simplify and accelerate event-driven application development.
