The growing popularity of cloud computing in India

Blog: NASSCOM Official Blog

There has been a rise in the demand for cloud technologies as Indian enterprises are considering to bridge the communication gap in the workforce and customer base, both of which have become more distributed.

Cloud-based solutions help in ensuring best-in-class safety and security of business data and information thereby building an environment of trust upon technology. The multi-billion cloud services market in India is expected to grow further strongly with a significant part of the enterprise workload finding its way on the cloud.

In the enterprise IT space, open-source architecture has gained significant ground. Open Source architecture has helped enterprises to bring cutting edge innovation to life. The growing number of open-source DevOps tools, automation and infrastructure platforms have helped in the easy adoption of open-source architecture. Thus, open-source cloud solutions are finding many takers in the market.

Industry observers have projected that IT spending on cloud platforms will reach 60 percent of all IT infrastructure, and 60-70 percent of all software services and technology spending.

Cloud computing must satisfy five essential principles – on demand services, access to a network, resource pooling, elasticity and measured services. To achieve these essential features, cloud computing provides three kinds of service models – Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).

As per media reports, the growth rate for investments in Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) have almost doubled from 32 percent in 2016 to 56 percent in 2019, making it the fastest-growing sector of cloud platforms. Gartner had predicted the IaaS market to reach US$ 72.4 billion worldwide by 2020.

Why are cloud services getting popular?

There are many factors that are driving the adoption of cloud services like reduced capex and opex to deliver business services and minimized IT costs with the reduction of delivery times. Cloud services also improve the quality of the app development process besides making transformation and optimization across different process stacks – sales, front-office, middle office and back office, a smooth affair.

The changing business model in which enterprises are looking to become integrators of the best-of-the-breed services through collaboration also means that the popularity of cloud solutions will witness a steep rise in the near future. More and more enterprises are looking to create effortless multi experiences with technology for organizations and customers.

Another reason Indian IT enterprises have begun turning to cloud is the flexibility and scalability that it offers without the need for any upfront investment in IT infrastructure.

There are four types of cloud deployment models namely public, private, hybrid and community. These deployment models differ on the basis of implementation type, hosting type and who has access to it.

To mitigate the impact of Covid-19, 63 percent of India’s enterprises ramped up investments in hybrid cloud compared to just 46 percent globally, revealed a new report from Nutanix Inc. The report showed that the hybrid model was the model of choice in India as 97 percent of respondents declared it as the correct architecture for their organizations, higher than the global average of 87 percent.

The report suggested that India is a front runner when it comes to modernizing IT infrastructures. The findings also highlight that while cost savings are a driver in deciding to modernize IT infrastructures, it is not the primary factor. Better control of IT resource usage (79 percent), increased speed to meet business needs (69 percent), and better support to customers (60 percent) are the key factors to modernization.
