SMB Cloud Adoption in India-Towards a Cloud First Nation

Blog: NASSCOM Official Blog

2020 will be remembered as a watershed year that saw the very fundamentals of life and business change drastically. As the COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise, we found ourselves completely unprepared for its impact. Business came almost to a standstill as governments worldwide imposed lockdown to stem its spread. And the small and medium businesses (SMBs) bore the brunt of it.

SMBs are the backbone of India’s economy. In 2019, they accounted for over one-third of India’s GDP and employed about 110 million people, second only to agriculture.

Given their significance, it is imperative that SMBs develop a resilient business model. However, while SMBs are the engine of India’s economic growth, they are also most vulnerable to disruptions vis-à-vis their larger counterparts.

Government stimulus packages are being implemented to bolster SMBs, but this is not a long-term solution. To enhance their global competitiveness and to thrive even during uncertain times, SMBs must become technology savvy. And cloud computing will play a big role in enabling their digital transformation.

In this context, NASSCOM has released a report that analyses the cloud adoption trends among SMBs in India. The report includes insights on adoption maturity, drivers, challenges to adoption and opportunity area for Tech SMEs.

It also lists a set of best practices that SMBs can implement during their cloud journey and for Tech SMEs, we have put together a Go-To-Market (GTM) framework. Tech SMEs can use this framework to tailor the GTM strategies based on their customer profiles.

The report features 17 case studies that show how cloud technology has been leveraged to address various problem statements ranging from scaling operations to enabling collaboration across widely distributed teams to simplifying technology architecture to enabling business continuity and more. What is encouraging is that many traditional business like education, oil & gas, energy, etc. are adopting cloud and this trend is set to accelerate over the next 1-2 years.

This report is free for members. You can download the executive summary (see below) and the full report is available at: https://nasscom.in/knowledge-center/publications/smb-cloud-adoption-india-towards-cloud-first-nation
