Sci-fi Drones Become Reality

Blog: AuraQuantic Blog

Drones have often been used in films as predators or spy aids and even in comedy films such as, The Interview, in which a drone delivers a replacement strip of poison to Kim Jong-un’s fortress, however drone technology is no longer science fiction and, in fact it has serious potential to improve diverse industries.

The latest drone technology combined with AuraPortal iBPMS has provided creative business solutions to administration problems. The drones improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency. In one case study the drones are used to transport documents from one part of the office to another and by keeping accurate records of the times documents are received, by whom and content information, the organization has eliminated all inefficiencies caused by the untimely delivery of documents, missing paperwork and human error.

A report from The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International predicts that the use of drones will lead to 100,000 new jobs and have an economic impact of $82 billion in the U.S. alone by 2025. The most promising markets recognized in the report include agriculture and public safety.

The following image of the economic impact of drones gives some idea of the potential and diversity of drones:

In agriculture, smart drones can scan crops to detect the presence of pests and directly spray the affected areas, hereby reducing the amount of pesticide used, which in-turn reduces the environmental impact of chemical use and improves food quality. Likewise sensors can detect the need for fertilizers to improve precision and crop yield. Drones can be equipped with high-resolution cameras, infrared and thermal sensors and even ground-penetrating radars enabling farmers to easily control Vast fields and ranchlands. Farmers receive real-time information on their crops; if they are too wet, too dry diseased and can even count and measure their plants.

In the not too distant future drones could be used in disaster relief and any situations which are too dangerous for humans to enter. Drones equipped with cameras can find survivors, deliver essential supplies and provide decision makers with real-time information for the establishment of relief operations on the ground. Firefighters can also benefit from drone intelligence as aerial cameras can help them to safely assess situations such as forest fires and dangerous chemical leaks. Furthermore they have proven beneficial in the rescue of hikers lost on rugged terrain. The successful rescue drones found the distressed hikers within two to three minutes.

Insurance is another industry that can benefit from the use of drones.  Insurance claim adjustors can see real-time essential information for the validation of claims. The aerial vehicles can be used to easily assess claims such as hail damage to roofs and other areas which are difficult to view and crop insurance claims.

“One day, a drone may be your eyes and ears,” said Peter Sondergaard, a research director at Gartner, a leading American information technology research and advisory firm. Indeed, Smart drones are emerging technologies that in the near future will become part of everyday operations in many industries and when combined with a powerful iBPMS like AuraPortal they can optimize business processes.
