Eine Process Engine (auch Workflow Engine) ist eine Applikation, welche die (reine) Steuerung der Prozessausführung übernimmt. Die auszuführenden Prozesse müssen daher im Vorfeld entsprechend definiert werden, damit die Engine alle Aktivitäten abarbeiten kann. Hierzu werden i.d.R. Modellierungssprachen wie die BPMN oder CMMN verwendet.
