Oracle Volunteers Get Their Hands Dirty for a Cleaner Planet

During the month of April, more than 1,300 Oracle Volunteers took action for a healthy planet. They collaborated with 63 leading environmental organizations as part of Focus on Environment, the annual global initiative that makes nature the center of attention.
Wearing red t-shirts and big smiles, Oracle Volunteers followed through on more than 75 projects: cleaning up the coastlines of California, Puerto Rico, Malaysia, and Spain; planting trees in Romania, Lebanon, Hong Kong, and India; and beautifying parks across Italy, Mexico, Canada, the UK, and the US.
Oracle Volunteers rallied their colleagues to get outside and elevated their collective impact by inviting friends, family, and the community to join in—planting flowers with seniors, tending gardens with children, picking up litter, and cleaning waterways with friends old and new.
Here are a few highlights from around the world:
Asia Pacific
In Chennai, India, Oracle Volunteers tidied up habitats at Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and learned that aquatic reptiles are very cool indeed. In Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, volunteers planted saplings, seedlings, and medicinal plants to support the work of environmental nonprofit organizations like Green Hills Group and WWF India. Oracle Volunteers in Tokyo watered and tended flowerbeds in Gaienmae Square with the Aoyama Town Association. In Sepang, employees trekked the beach and combed the sand for debris in their first-ever cleanup with the municipal council. Oracle Volunteers in Hong Kong teamed up with Friends of the Earth to plant trees in Tai Lam Country Park, an area that sustained damage during Typhoon Mangkhut.
Europe, Middle East, and Africa
In Beirut, Oracle Volunteers and their families prepared the soil and planted trees with the Jouzour Loubnan Association. Volunteers in Malaga enjoyed some sunshine while cleaning up La Malagueta beach with AndaLimpia. In Rosh Ha’ayin, Oracle Volunteers teamed up with Ruach Tova and a bunch of kindergarteners to plant a therapeutic garden. Volunteers in Bucharest planted trees alongside youth from FARA, a nonprofit that serves children from disadvantaged backgrounds. And in Brno, Oracle Volunteers rallied to clean up the banks of the Svratka River with Povodí Moravy.
Latin America
In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oracle Volunteers supported Scuba Dogs Society’s conservation efforts by removing trash from Escambrón Beach. Oracle Volunteers in Mexico City collaborated with Manos A La Tierra to tend chinampas, small, rectangular “floating fields” that grow crops in shallow lakebeds. In San Jose, volunteers donned their red shirts to sort recyclables and freshen up the garden and outdoor spaces at Escuela República de Francia.
North America
During the lunch hour, Oracle Volunteers cleaned up Victoria Park with the City of Kitchener in Ontario, Canada. In Denver, Hillsboro, and Sunrise, employees removed litter and invasive plant species from City Park, Rock Creek Trail, and Markham Park in collaboration with Denver Parks and Recreation, HandsOn Broward, and SOLV. Along the California Coast, from San Diego to San Francisco, employees removed plastic and litter from local beaches with organizations like I Love a Clean San Diego, Heal the Bay, and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. In Sacramento and Austin, Oracle Volunteers tidied up the banks of creeks and rivers with American River Foundation and Keep Austin Beautiful. In Pleasanton, Oracle Volunteers hosted Girl Scouts for a campus tour to highlight Oracle’s sustainability initiatives. And, all around the San Francisco Bay Area, Oracle Volunteers helped out at parks, doing trail repair, native plant restoration, and campground maintenance, teaming up with California State Parks Foundation, the City and County of Santa Clara, and San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Foundation.
A giant thank you to everyone who led and participated in Oracle Volunteering projects in the month of April. While Focus on Environment wrapped up April 30, the need to protect our planet never ends. Every day is Earth Day. And, lucky for us, the Oracle Volunteering program offers year-round opportunities to protect the environment, as well as to advance education and strengthen communities through hands-on volunteerism.
