Oracle OpenWorld: A Vision to Disrupt the Cloud

Blog: Oracle BPM

Oh, #OOW19, where should I start? There were compelling sessions, brilliant people, and an entire playpen of puppies. But the most exciting part hands down was the technology and new concepts announced at the event, starting with this simple yet bold claim that kicked off Oracle OpenWorld 2019:

Oracle is a people-focused, data-driven organization.

This message was everywhere at the conference. I saw proof of it in the technology I was fortunate enough to experience and heard about it firsthand from customers already using it at their organizations. It was also evident at the many sessions I attended and with the numerous product leaders I spoke with.

That said, here are five major takeaways from Oracle OpenWorld 2019 that everyone should pay attention to:

1. People-focused and data-driven. As I mentioned, this was a big message at this year’s OpenWorld. There were several announcements that focused on how Oracle was helping to improve people’s lives and how they interact with business and their customers.

For example, new updates to Oracle Analytics let you leverage Oracle Cloud, Oracle Analytics Server, and even Oracle Analytics for apps. This integrates with deep machine learning solutions that allow you to use bots and analytics with actionable insights. Imagine being able to use all your data to automatically pinpoint your top-performing employees or most optimal hire; detect fraud immediately; or optimize supplied payments and cash positions. The key part is that your corporate and user data become an integral, autonomous part of your business. Being able to find value around your employees and how to optimize operations is a massive part of disrupting your industry and finding new ways to compete. Plus, this Oracle Cloud Analytics ecosystem also features data visualization, integration with other data engines (Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI, IBM Watson, etc.,), and more.

2. To get all these new tools, autonomy, and cloud solutions, you need to be willing to pay less. As Larry Ellison stood on stage, he discussed some major advancements within Oracle. He discussed the Oracle and VMware partnership and how the Oracle Cloud footprint will grow to 36 Oracle regions by the end of next year. That’s huge.

But when he said he’s giving away Oracle Cloud, Autonomous Data Warehouse, and more for free, my first reaction was, “No way!” But it is free, for everyone. Developers, students, Oracle Academy, Enterprises, home users; everyone. And what’s free isn’t some knock-off functionality, either. You have access to the most advanced Oracle Cloud services. This includes your choice of Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing or Autonomous Data Warehouse, compute instances, two block volumes of storage, and even additional services like load balancing and monitoring of more than 500 million data ingestion points, and much more. This isn’t a joke. If you’ve been wanting to test some real-world workloads on Oracle Cloud, this is absolutely the best time to do so.

3. A continued focus on the world’s first autonomous database. This part is so cool! To really get the low-down on this platform, read my three-part blog series. Basically, Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse is a self-driving, self-securing, self-repairing autonomous database that’s effectively created an entirely new category in the industry.

Here’s the other part…and I hope you’re sitting down for this one. Oracle has designed the Autonomous Data Warehouse as your one-stop, single data ingestion engine for everything. Other solutions also have a database – but that means there’s one for everything which drastically complicates data management. Oracle Database has the potential to serve as the backend for everything! Amazing.

4. Autonomous Oracle Linux is outstanding. This was another winner in my book. As the world’s first autonomous operating system, Autonomous Oracle Linux aims to revolutionize the way traditional operating systems are managed and deployed.

Aside from powering the world’s biggest Raspberry Pi cluster, it’s also designed to be persistently reliable and always secure. Features include automatic provisioning, scaling, and tuning. Oh, it also does automatic patching, updating, security monitoring, and proactive remediation!

Last but certainly not least…

5. Creating a predictive and prescriptive security model. Did you know that data breaches were up 54% in 2019? And, did you also know that, since it’s enforcement in 2018, GDPR fines have reached $400M? With privacy regulations continuing to proliferate and data becoming even more of a target, Oracle has taken an entirely proactive approach to securing their environment.

With the release of Data Safe, Oracle aims to protect both users and data by assessing, detecting, and preventing threats. Using data discovery, advanced user and security assessments, Data Safe detects anomalous behavior; audits activity and proactively masks sensitive data. The preventative and proactive nature of Data Safe makes it unique. You can design a database that will mask data, manage keys, do data redaction, and much more. Already an Oracle Cloud Database customer? Well then, you already have this product – it’s built in! All you need to do is follow a couple of simple steps and it’ll be activated. Be sure to check it out.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to attend a lot of conferences, including other Oracle events, but OpenWorld 2019 felt different. I got the chance to hear about exciting, if not downright revolutionary technologies. There was a general tone around simplifying technology, reducing complexity, and helping eliminate data and ecosystem fragmentation. It really felt like Oracle is on its way to becoming the ring that binds all these core technologies together.

The future of Oracle product offerings is exciting. If you’re an Oracle customer, you have an entire playground of tools, features, and new solutions that are either available to you today, or will be in the near future. Most of all, these new pieces of tech are just a few clicks away and don’t come with any additional charges.

The message was clear: Oracle is shifting into a new generation of cloud and data management solutions. A shift that’s creating a new level of focus. One that heavily revolves around people and how to make their lives easier and better. I find that a refreshing (and needed) message and direction. It’s amazing to see where this technology will go, how Oracle Cloud will continue to grow, and how Oracle will transform the industry to be even more people-focused and data-driven.
