On the Radar: Noddlepod

Born out of a frustration with traditional LMS-based learning technologies, UK-based Noddlepod offers a SaaS-based collaborative learning solution that combines modern social and interactive features with a more formal, structured approach.

Who?

Based in Caerphilly, Wales, Noddlepod provides SaaS-based knowledge sharing solutions to support collaborative learning.

What does it do?

The Noddlepod collaborative learning application combines the structure of traditional learning platforms with the unstructured interaction of social collaboration solutions to provide support both during and between formal learning programmes – in commercial sectors as well as in Higher Education environments.

Built with Ruby on Rails and hosted on Amazon Web Services, Noddlepod allows course co-ordinators to establish members-only groups for course attendees, within which they can create a semi-formal, category-based structure that corresponds to the key elements or modules of the training programme. The co-ordinator and course participants can then share content with the group in the form of text-based or multimedia posts, with support for comments-based discussion and interaction around each post. Files can also be attached to a post. An interesting feature provides support for collaborative editing of posts, whereby the original author can specify that any other member of the group can edit the post. Every user within Noddlepod has a profile, and all posts and comments are attributed to their author. All edits to a post are tracked through a version history; previous versions can also be restored. Posts can also be marked as “private” (for example while they are still in draft form), or as “flagged” which pins the post to the top of the category feed (the latter is only available to group admins). Each post can only be classified within a single category, or it can be uncategorised.
