Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Wins Its 6th Constructors’ Championship

Blog: The Tibco Blog

In the world of Formula One racing, nothing stops teams from taking to the track. Well, maybe a typhoon.

In light of the passing of Typhoon Hagabis over Suzuka, Formula One™ fans around the world were notified that there would be no track action this past Saturday, which meant that qualifying would move to Sunday just right before the lights go out at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.

That didn’t stop Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Valterri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton who took a one-two respectively after Friday’s two practice sessions. Due to the altered timeline, teams skipped the third free practice, typically held on Saturday, and moved into the qualification series.

On the heels of the typhoon, the race went on as planned on Sunday, leaving F1™ drivers to deal with potentially very wet track conditions. As we know, this can significantly alter race performance but didn’t seem to be a problem for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.  And after a successful race where Bottas took first, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport also took home its 6th consecutive Constructors’ Championship. This makes the team the second constructor to win six titles, just after Ferrari.

The Constructors’ title was first awarded in 1958 and this is now the sixth title for Mercedes-Benz as a constructor (the company’s first F1™ involvement as a constructor ran from 1954 to 1955, when the title was not in existence). The title is awarded to the most successful F1™ constructor over the course of the season determined by a points system based on Grand Prix results. The standings are calculated by adding points scored in each race by any driver for that constructor. Hence, the better a driver does in the race, the more points the team is rewarded towards the Constructors’ Championship.

Going into the Japanese Grand Prix, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport led in the Constructors’ Championship standings, with 571 points, a substantial lead over Ferrari who was in second place with 409 points. After the race, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport took home the 2019 FIA Formula One™ World Constructors’ Championship with 612 total points.

Additionally, Hamilton and Bottas are now one step closer to one of them claiming the 2019 FIA Formula One™ World Drivers’ Championship — an astounding historic six consecutive double titles! Stay tuned….
