Making Cities Smarter Using Connected Intelligence

Blog: The Tibco Blog

The ultimate goal of a smart city is to leverage an ecosystem built on infrastructure and technology to enhance the living conditions of its residents. Smart cities deliver enhanced services and better conditions to its citizens while optimizing their processes and decreasing maintenance costs. The smart city market is being propelled by the growing adoption of technologies such as IoT, cloud, big data, cognitive computing, and open data. According to a new report by Grand View Research Inc., the global smart cities market size was valued at USD 563.36 billion in 2016 and is anticipated to reach USD 2.57 trillion by 2025.

Several key drivers for smart cities are:

  1. Major city centers are dramatically expanding in size, scale, and complexity, putting greater demands on services and traditional infrastructure.
  2. Advancements in IoT and streaming analytics has laid the foundation for new innovative use cases such as e-governance, smart healthcare, smart meters, etc.
  3. Publicly accessible ecosystems are becoming in demand, empowering citizens to provide ideas that fulfill the needs of the community.
  4. Unlocking predictive possibilities for the municipality to intervene as soon a failure or anomaly occurs like malfunctioning traffic lights. This allows for prompt maintenance and raises the level of security.

Last but not the least, smart cities enable citizens to be an active part of the city. A great example of garnering citizen participation is introducing gamification through mobile applications where citizens can report such things as accidents, bad illumination, abandoned waste, potholes, etc., and the city could respond with feedback once it has been solved. These “games”, that encourage correspondence with the municipality, are one example of how smart cities would enable citizens to feel they are an integral part of the community.

What makes up a smart city platform?

A comprehensive smart city platform should have the ability to provide a unified solution that can enable a city to establish multiple services for sustainability and mitigating risks. Some of these solutions include:

The underpinnings of most smart city solutions are to build certain key competencies which can be scaled to become an enterprise solution such as:

TIBCO’s Connected Intelligence platform delivers all the competencies needed for an enterprise-class smart city solution. TIBCO is uniquely positioned to help customers build IoT based solutions and deliver smart connected solutions.

How is TIBCO helping in the smart city market?

Some of our smart city customers have embarked on their journey to become a vision-zero city by implementing a smart mobility solution built on TIBCO to reduce the number of road fatalities through artificial intelligence and streaming analytics. The solution leverages IoT traffic sensor data that is streaming in and analyzes it using machine learning models. The solution would then accurately score an aggregation of the sensor data as a potentially malicious traffic pattern with a high probability of an accident to occur. The platform would then “act” on the score by leveraging intelligent case management to assign the incident to the appropriate agency. The same solution is now being extended to solve other use cases as well.

There are a lot of ancillary benefits to implementing a smart city solution such as exposing your processes and information securely to the public. For example, one of our customers is exposing their collected data to trusted partners like insurance providers, hospitals, etc. to open up a new monetization and operational model. The insurance provider is looking to leverage the traffic data exposed by the city which include statistics like speed, the number of cars, etc. to make their claims processing more data-driven. The smart city solution then bills their trusted partners like the insurer and developers upon using their data per API call. The solution provides an API monetization layer which allows secure and scalable access to citizens and partners.
