How to Be a Champion in Your Business: 3 Wins Inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you saw the opening race in Bahrain and the second race in Italy, you watched Lewis Hamilton’s skillful driving take on numerous challenges. If you didn’t catch the races, here’s a quick re-cap:

At Bahrain’s season opener, limited car testing meant Hamilton lacked the typical time and experience driving the new flooring adjustments. Starting from L1, Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had a wheel-to-wheel battle for nearly the entire race, keeping within fractions of a second of each other. Hamilton struggled to take the lead for 54 laps but ended up in first place with a 0.7 second lead after Verstappen ran wide on the exit of L53.

At the Imola race in Italy, Hamilton starts the race in first place but slides off the track on L31 after hitting wet pavement. This damaged his front wing and caused him to fall back to eighth place by L34. After a crash between Russell and Bottas, the race was reset, and Hamilton was able to claw his way back to the podium, finishing in second place after securing the fastest lap on L60.

Expert driving, combined with TIBCO’s real-time data capabilities, helped Hamilton take the podium for the first two races of the 2021 season—despite racing setbacks.

Want your business to keep winning despite challenges? Read on to learn about how the Formula One Team leverages data solutions to win race after race.

Connect Your IoT Devices

The modern data-centric economy is exploding with connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices from smartphones to equipment sensors. Businesses need to integrate these devices for collective insight into operations. By aggregating the massive flow of disparate data into a cohesive view, businesses can analyze data to act on real-time insights quickly.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team uses sensor data on their cars to monitor actual race performance compared to predicted performance. The Team’s real-time data collection impacts the car design, race preparation, race strategy, and ultimately race results.

Like the Formula One team, CargoSmart uses IoT to act on real-time insights. CargoSmart applies artificial intelligence to IoT data for augmented decision-making around disruption handling. For example, medical supply manufacturers need to know that certain supplies are continually refrigerated along the shipping journey. If conditions change, IoT temperature sensors can raise events to alert CargoSmart employees and visualize changes for customers in real-time.

Measure with a Digital Twin

Digital twins are virtual models of physical systems that offer tremendous value. In the manufacturing and transportation industry, companies can digitally monitor physical assets and predict when maintenance is needed to reduce downtime. In the healthcare industry, doctors can map patient outcomes on a virtual patient simulation.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has turned digital twins into a competitive advantage. The Team’s racing simulator mimics the real track experience and maximizes the benefits of limited on-track testing time. Driving conditions are replicated to give the drivers the feeling they are on one of the circuits. With numerous restrictions on testing, the simulator provides a close substitute to real-world conditions.

Dutch Railways uses their “virtual train” to monitor train status, open seats, and delays. Dutch Railways can notify maintenance of potential train issues to anticipate and act—keeping trains on the track, which is crucial in the transportation industry. With all this real-time data, the company created a mobile app for customers to see train locations and open seats.

Gain Real-time Insights with Analytics

Hyperconverged Analytics helps you understand past and present trends to make more informed decisions and achieve better outcomes. It brings visual analytics, data science, and streaming capabilities together in a seamless experience to deliver immersive, smart, and real-time business insights.

With hyperconverged analytics, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team can predict insights at scale. After identifying circuit variables, the Team can build a model that will predict lap-time performance. TIBCO Spotfire interprets the data output so that the Team can gain insight into driver performance. The model can predict significant events—enabling preparation that could be the difference between winning and losing.

Hyperconverged analytics also fuels insights at Bayer Crop Sciences. Bayer uses analytics to help their agricultural customers track crops worldwide and react proactively: helping farmers determine if any equipment is needed, monitoring weather conditions, checking the progress of crop growth, and more.
