Focus on Community Recap: Oracle Volunteers Warm Hearts and Fulfill Wishes

Blog: Oracle BPM

Helen Keller once said, “alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much.”

While we believe each of us has the power to make a positive impact in the lives of others, we are certain that what we can accomplish together in service is far greater than anything we can accomplish alone.

It’s this belief that underlies Focus on Community, our global initiative that encourages employees to band together to strengthen their local community by supporting individuals and families in need through meaningful volunteering projects.

During this year’s Focus on Community in November and December, employees rounded out the decade by experiencing the joy of giving. Whether collecting and donating groceries, toys, and clothing; serving meals; or wrapping gifts, Oracle Volunteers made a difference in the lives of their fellow community members. At the same time, many Oracle employees took advantage of the company match in MyGiving to amplify their own generosity.

Over the course of two months, close to 5,000 Oracle Volunteers organized 380 projects, donating nearly 16,000 hours to the organizations and causes they love.

Here’s a look at Focus on Community around the world.

Asia Pacific

Across India, more than 1,400 Oracle Volunteers helped to save lives by donating blood at seven different blood banks. In North Adelaide, a team of Oracle Volunteers came together to prepare a hearty meal for families staying at Ronald McDonald House while their children receive medical care from local hospitals. And just outside of Metro Manila, Oracle Volunteers brought joy to orphaned and abandoned children by hosting a holiday celebration and gift exchange.

Europe, Middle East and Africa

In Bucharest, close to 200 employees stayed up all night wrapping gifts as part of Smile in a Box, a project that collects and delivers presents to children and families in need. In Prague, Oracle Volunteers provided warmth and care to our furry friends by building winter shelters. And in Malaga, Oracle Volunteers spent quality time with the elderly at a local senior center.

Latin America

In 2019, Oracle Volunteers in São Paulo provided year-round support to nonprofit Instituto PROA, which provides resources to youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. To round out a year of giving and volunteering, Oracle Volunteers collected and donated new and gently used professional attire that PROA youth will use for job interviews. Meanwhile in Guadalajara, employees put their creativity to good use by handcrafting dolls that were distributed to children in low-income areas. And in Santiago, Oracle Volunteers brought cheer to children who spent their holidays in the hospital by gathering and delivering presents.

North America

In Philadelphia, employees helped host a festive holiday party for families experiencing homelessness. In our Toronto office, Oracle Volunteers organized a toy drive and wrapping party to make children’s holiday wishes come true. In the San Francisco Bay Area, employees organized gift drives to benefit foster youth and children living in poverty, collected warm jackets to distribute for the winter season, and gathered and sorted groceries with local food banks.

We are excited to see how Oracle Volunteers give back to their communities in this new decade. We invite you to learn more about the ways that Oracle Volunteers support those in need by visiting oracle.com/volunteering
