Digitization will Revolutionize Healthcare

Blog: Software AG Blog - Reality Check

customerSMToday’s healthcare system is under almost perpetual stress; budgets are tight, aging populations put a strain on hospitals, new diseases or pandemics pop up without warning.

Digital technology may be the answer to helping the industry lower costs and maximize efficiency.  From wearable sensors that alert doctors to a patient’s distress to a mobile phone text reminding a patient of an upcoming appointment, today’s technologies can help facilitate customer engagement saving many hours of manual intervention.

Consider the care and time needed to physically monitor and respond to patients with brain disorders. Epilepsy, depression, and multiple sclerosis are distinct disorders, with different causes and symptoms, all of which can be severely detrimental to patients’ quality of life and life expectancy.

For these disorders and others, patients often experience periods where their symptoms are manageable, followed by periods of deterioration and acute illness or relapse. If doctors could predict when these relapses might happen, and improve the patient’s treatments to prevent a recurrence, it would save unnecessary suffering on the part of the patient as well as saving the valuable time and resources of healthcare providers.

The digital world can help. There is a major new research program using wearable devices and smartphone technology to develop new ways of these monitoring major disorders.

Called the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse – Central Nervous System, or RADAR-CNS, the program aims to improve patients’ quality of life. Doctors and hospitals can perform continuous remote assessments of patients using data transmitted from their smartphones and wearable devices. This can provide real-time transparency into a patient’s condition, at a previously unheard of level of granularity.

So, when even small changes in behavior begin to form a pattern, alerts can be sent to a doctor or hospital prompting an immediate response which could prevent the patient relapsing or becoming more ill before they seek treatment.

RADAR-CNS is jointly led by King’s College London and Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and is funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative, Europe’s largest public-private initiative, and includes 24 partners from across Europe and the US.

The programme brings together experts from diverse fields including clinical research, engineering, computer science, information technology, data analytics and health services.

Software AG is proud to have been included as a technology partner. We will provide key elements of our Digital Business Platform, including Apama Big Data Streaming Analytics and Terracotta In-Memory Data Fabric.  This will enable researchers to access unprecedented amounts of data from wearable smart devices in real-time for deep insights into brain disorders. The Digital Business Platform will enable “personalized analytics” for patients and provide doctors with early warnings of aberrant behavior. For example, early insight into the behavior change of a depressed patient can lead to an early intervention, preventing a serious relapse.

This is the kind of digitization that can revolutionize healthcare.
