Prompted by a lengthy discussion on the BPTrends LinkedIn site, Jan vom Brocke enlisted the collaboration of his colleagues, Theresa Schmiedel, Jan Recker, Peter Trkman, William Mertens and Stijn Viaene, to share their joint experience at a 2013 BPM workshop at the University Liechtenstein. There they developed ten principles of good BPM which they present in this Column.
Jan Recker is Professor and Woolworths Chair of Retail Innovation at Queensland University Technology in Brisbane, Australia. His research concerns process management, organizational innovation and IT-enabled business transformations. He has written several books on Business Process Management and other topics. Theresa Schmiedel is an Assistant Professor at the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management at the University of Liechtenstein. She holds a PhD in business economics from the University of Liechtenstein and a Diploma in economics from the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany, which she conducted partially at York University, Toronto, Canada. She worked as a Research Assistant at the Department for Sociology and Empirical Social Research, University of Hohenheim, and the Center for Cultural and General Studies, University of Karlsruhe, Germany. Her research focuses on social aspects in information systems research, particularly on the interconnection of culture and business process management (www.bpm-culture.org). Her work has been published in journals, including Information & Management, Enterprise Information Systems, and Business Process Management Journal, as well as in academic books and conference proceedings.
Peter Trkman is an associate professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Ljubljana. His research interests encompass business models, various aspects of business process, supply chain and operations management as well as technology adoption and e-government. He participated in several national and international projects, helping companies to model, analyze and improve their business processes. He published over 80 papers/book chapters, including papers in highly-rated journals like Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Production Research, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Long Range Planning and Supply Chain. He was a visiting professor at several universities around the world. He serves as a reviewer for journals, several funding agencies and Ph. D. theses. He won several awards for his research while his work has been cited over 1300 times. He consistently scores well above the average in students’ evaluations of his pedagogical work.
Willem Mertens graduated from KU Leuven in 2008, holding a Master degree in Psychology (Industry, Community and Organizational Psychology). He is working as a researcher at Vlerick Business School in the Technology & Operations Management Area since 2009, conducting ad hoc research on various topics in the field of Business Process Management. In 2011 he was also granted a three year PhD scholarship by the Intercollegiate Centre for Management Science (ICM). In his doctoral research he focuses on Positive Deviance.
Stijn Viaene is Partner and Full Professor at Vlerick Business School. He is also a tenured Professor in the Department Decision Sciences and Information Management at KU Leuven in Belgium. At the university he holds the VDAB Chair of “Digital business innovation in public services”. His research and teaching focus on information systems management (ISM) issues in three primary areas: (1) business and IT alignment, strategy, leadership and governance, (2) business process management (BPM), and (3) business intelligence (BI) & analytics. He supervises multiple research for business initiatives in collaboration with industry and public sector partners at Vlerick Business School, including the centre for excellence “BPM Network” and the centre for excellence “Enterprise Architecture Management”. Stijn’s work has been published in research (for business) outlets such as MIT Sloan Management Review, Communications of the ACM, Information and Management, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of Enterprise Architecture, Business Process Management Journal, IEEE IT Professional, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, European Journal of Operational Research and Expert Systems with Applications.
