Chicago’s Innovative Architecture is Backdrop to Data-driven Innovation at TIBCO NOW

Blog: The Tibco Blog

Home of both the Chicago School and Prairie School style of architecture, Chicago is well known as the crucible of architectural innovation. Just one look at Chicago’s amazing skyline provides a vivid showcase of the results of all this innovation.

So, it is only natural that “Innovation Everywhere,” the mantra for enterprises’ relentless obsession to uncover business insights, drive competitive advantage, and ignite new opportunities, was the theme at TIBCO NOW Chicago. And much like the hugely popular Chicago River Architecture Tours, from start to finish, this event delivered!

As TIBCO’s thought leader for Data Management, it was especially satisfying to see how for TIBCO customers, data-driven innovation is proving one of the most essential ingredients fueling their digital transformations. Whether transforming their customer engagements to delight and retain their customers, reengineering their R&D to get new products to market faster than their competition, or further optimizing their business processes for faster sensing and response in today’s digital world, data was the common denominator.

Top Five Takeaways

It’s impossible to share all the great data-related content I gathered at TIBCO NOW in this short blog. Instead, I will do my best to highlight the events at Chicago like standouts from the executive keynotes, breakout sessions, dozens of customer and partner conversations, and a myriad of other activities that filled both days.

1. New “Unify Information” Portfolio Messaging

It was exciting to see TIBCO’s new “Unify Information” messaging presented by CTO Nelson Petracek in his keynote. Unify Information is how TIBCO can help our customers bring together and add value from connected data about their customers, products and other assets so it becomes a strength every employee can leverage.

2. Netspend: Boldly going where no MDM has gone before!

Processing over $32 billion in gross dollar volume, Netspend is the second largest US prepaid program manager serving over 4.9 million active cards and 2.4 direct deposit cards. You might be one of their customers. I am. So I was especially interested in going behind the curtain to see how they do it.

Netspend is the market leader in prepaid cards sold via a variety of channels

In their session entitled “TIBCO EBX™, A Holistic Data Asset Management Solution”, Netspend MDM Solutions Architect, David Cuellar, described their 10-year journey with TIBCO EBX™software. In it, Cuellar did a great job bringing to life why it is so critical that customer-driven organizations apply a “shared data asset management” lens to their master, reference and metadata challenges. I learned a lot about their challenges and solutions. And as a customer, I feel a lot better about how they are managing one of their most important data assets–me!

3. TIBCO ComputeDB™: The Apache Spark-based Analytics Database

I really enjoyed learning more about the complex business problems TIBCO customers are solving with TIBCO ComputeDB™, an in-memory optimized analytics database based on Apache Spark™ and Apache Geode™

TIBCO ComputeDB™helps customers solve complex business challenges

TIBCO ComputeDB™ combines state-of-the-art approximate query processing techniques to ensure low-latency interactive analytics for both streaming and stored data. Plus TIBCO ComputeDB™ database’s superior memory management and optimizations result in increased throughput, real-time capabilities, and speeds that are up to 20 times faster than Apache Spark™

That’s pretty amazing!

4.  My One on One with Stewart Bond of IDC

Stewart Bond, Research Director of Data Integration and Data Integrity Software at IDC, is one of my favorite analysts, and it was delightful to compare notes on data-related technology trends.

He had just completed his annual update of his Worldwide Data Integration and Data Integrity Software Forecast, 2019-2023 which included his quantitative and qualitative insights into the data integration and integrity (DII) software market as well as the drivers behind the 10.4 percent CAGR he projected. In our discussion, I confirmed his findings, noting an accelerating demand for products such as TIBCO® Data Virtualization and TIBCO EBX™software.

Bond noted that his 2019 update of Data Integration and Integrity End User Survey is currently in the works. It will be interesting to see whether Bond’s infamous 80/20 rule about how much time analysts spend chasing data instead of analyzing it changes this year. I often cite Bond’s research in the slide below when I talk with customers about their data management challenges. With “Yes, that’s what it is like here” their inevitable response.

5. TIBCO Data Virtualization was Everywhere

Given my long tenure in data virtualization and my experience as co-author of the first book on data virtualization that included over 100 pages of customer case studies, I enjoyed talking with so many TIBCO Data Virtualization customers about their current and future data virtualization deployments.

It was especially satisfying to hear their stories about how TIBCO Data Virtualization’s more agile data architecture is helping them drive business value.

How TIBCO Data Virtualization helps customers drive business value

It was fun to discuss how organizations such as European candymaker Cloetta used data virtualization to optimize their business during one of TIBCO NOW’s most popular breakouts, “Democratize Analytic Data with TIBCO Data Virtualization”, which I co-presented with Stephen Archut, Senior Product Marketing Manager for TIBCO Data Virtualization.

Chicago: My Kind of Town

From innovative architecture to innovation-driven business transformation, Chicago, in the words of Frank Sinatra, is “my kind of town.” If you missed TIBCO NOW Chicago, don’t worry because TIBCO NOW London is right around the corner. I hope to see you there!
