Business Process Improvement: Technology Trends Business Analysts Should Be Aware Of

Blog: Business Analyst Learnings Blog

Business technology continues to evolve in many ways. Some of these changes have the potential to revolutionalize business operations, if properly implemented. The following are some trends business analysts should be aware of.

The Robotic Revolution Is Here

Robotic process automation or RPA is one of the biggest changes in industry. It involves the automation of repetitive/administrative processes within the business so that professionals can focus on strategic and value-adding tasks. RPA technology can refer to a chatbot or a program designed to carry out repetitive processes based on pre-defined logic. This may not seem all that revolutionary but it is.

At the moment, RPA programs are automating legal processes, meaning that people can now defend themselves without the help of a real lawyer. Other examples of RPA application include creation of database records, and tasks involving significant data entry/copy-paste actions.

Business analysts can help clarify process requirements and specific steps where the introduction of automation (bots) can add value. For example, the BA may help the business identify the kind of business rules and processes that may be automated. Accurate requirements are key to ensuring business needs are met.

AI Is Coming

Though RPA has the potential to change many aspects of how business improvement projects are implemented, there are other changes coming which are worth mentioning, like AI. The one limitation RPA has is that bots simply cannot learn, which is where AI technology comes in.

Unlike RPA, AI programs learn through mistakes or problems. In essence, the machine will learn in the same way people learn when a problem arises. Now, this technology is not perfect just yet, but it is showing huge potential. This technology can already analyze context to figure out what a person is talking about. It should also be noted that AI is already being used by large corporations like Google and SEB, one of Sweden’s largest banks.

Business Analysts can contribute to AI projects by recommending the actions to be taken when unexpected scenarios are encountered by the technology.

Big Data Is Making A Big Splash

Data is becoming even more critical for making sound business decisions. This is one reason the internet of things has become popular. The internet of things makes smart appliances even more effective. All of this is good news, but there is a downside to all that data floating around, and it is hitting technology illiterate people the hardest.

BAs can exploit big data to identify the root cause of business problems, find flaws in business processes and provide critical business insights to stakeholders.

Speed Is Changing Things Around

More industries are seeing the implementation of Big data, AI, and RPA. These trends are targeted at solving issues just like a human being would. Several companies are taking action and are starting to change their business models. Most businesses are also starting to see that the only way to keep customers coming back is to offer value.

There is no way to predict the changes that are going to come after all these technologies are introduced into the business landscape, but there is no doubt that creating positive experiences is going to be key for business analysts. BAs should focus on standing in as advocates for stakeholders and creating experiences for them that no device can imitate.

Business Analysis In Flux

Business Analysts, depending on how work is structured, are expected to understand enterprise architecture, project management, interface design, data analysis, cloud technology, enough to work with professionals in these areas. To keep abreast of new developments, get involved in seminars, events and research spaces across these fields. You may also consider taking online diploma courses in business analysis and related disciplines.
