BPM meets Digital Age – Win the new book „Management by Internet“ by Willms Buhse

Evaluation of Digital Age BPM ideasTogether with eight fearless BPM experts from four different organizations, we went on an exciting journey to bring together Digital Age and BPM. Supported by Dr. Willms Buhse and his experts from doubleYUU, we have developed a number of possibilities to combine web 2.0 and social media features as well as digital leadership aspects with business process management.

Today, we are going to introduce the results of this workshop series in more detail. – And please don’t miss the chance to win a copy of the inspiring book “Management by Internet” by Willms Buhse at the end of this article. The book covers a lot of the aspects, which we combined with BPM and provides practical examples how to benefit from the Digital Age as a manager.

Overall goal of the workshop series was to increase the acceptance and the benefit of BPM by the implementation of Digital Age elements. Within the first workshop session, we developed more than 70 ideas which we clustered into six areas of interest for further evaluation: ‘Participation’, ‘Training and Communication’, ‘Feedback and Exchange’, ‘Search Engine’, ‘Process Transparency’, and ‘Mobile Access’.

Based on an evaluation of these six areas by BPM experts from the participating organizations, we started to develop prototypes during the second workshop for the eleven highest ranked ideas in an overnight delivery session. Afterwards, these prototypes went through a second evaluation cycle by employees of the participating organizations.

Search like googleBiggest winners of the evaluation by the employees were the ideas related to the ‘Search Engine’. Obviously, employees expect the search engine of the BPM system to be as fast and precise as google. But – as we have learned from Willms and his team – it is absolutely not fair to compare google with the search engine of a BPM system. Google processes much more search requests which can be analyzed and google invests an immense amount of money to optimize its algorithms. But there is still the expectation by the employees to have a search like google. Thus, we discussed ideas like tagging, result ranking, and previews to push the BPM search engine towards google expectations.

The "Like-Button" failed...Biggest looser of the evaluation was the “Like-Button” which was represented by a “heart” in our prototypes. By having a closer look onto the results, we realized that it probably doesn’t make sense to “like” a process. Result of our discussion was to redesign the button to a “Helpful”-Button which can be clicked by users to indicate that the process description was helpful for them.

Now, we are going to wrap-up all the learnings for a more detailed presentation of the results during our BPinPM.net Conference in Novembers as well as to prepare the prototypes for further evaluation. In addition, we will present detailed insights about the current implementation status of Digital Age BPM at one of the participating organizations at the conference. So if you are interested in more details, please meet us at the conference. :-)

To provide even more insights of the Digital Age elements which we have discussed during the workshop, we are going to raffle a copy of the new “Management by Internet” book by Willms Buhse. So don’t wait and enter the lottery here…

Best regards,
Mirko
