BPM a year in review 2014
Blog: End to End BPM
This year was sealed by the acceleration of the pace of change. I felt for the first time, the collision of forces that are shaping transformation, social, cloud, mobile and analytics.
From all the four forces, cloud is the most disrupting one. If social is here to stay and consumers are addicted to this new way of interacting with companies, is also true that new collaboration tools used in digital meetings, finding and involving people to help on challenges, is also part of new working patterns and are contributing to productivity boost. Mobile became our own world to a point that younger generations do not watch TV anymore. Mobile is the new me, is my private bedroom, were people can access what actually is meaningful for their professional and personal lives. It is also making us more physically isolated, looking to the screens, expanding our knowledge, interacting with our virtual families on multiple conversations.
Cloud technology, allows companies to enter into new ventures, implement new business solutions close to the “next day”, as also is driving to the rise of the self economy, like for example UBER. Far from the truth? Hype? Absolutely not. I participated in Microsoft ‘s Hackathon (Disclosure: I am a Microsoft employee) and during a week, a team build from a blank sheet of paper a solution to control on real time, oil production , temperature and pressure of pipelines, detecting second after second possible oil spills, with direct connection to red lines to government agencies for coordination purposes in case of a spill and unlocked social media accounts for communities that want to help. This is the power of the cloud, in one week, a solution that prevents a company to enter into disappearance or self-inflicting a huge loss was built. Without entering into architecture details, as also, because this is not the space to promote the technology of the company I work for, keep in mind that to control the referred parameters, the monitoring system must handle with time based databases, that every minute (or less) record a data point and on top of that flood of data, it is necessary to detect the leaks and infer trends. The sensors, the”things”, exist kilometre, after kilometre, pipelines runs distances bigger than some railroads. It not just a mater of processing power like the graphical workstations I used to work in my Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Engineering models, it is a matter of being able to reason in the desert and to master that art of “continue hunting or becoming the prey”. This is the power of the cloud. Sets you free.
On the beginning of the year, as I wrote in The Next Process blog post, I had the opportunity to create an architecture foundation to support health care services using BP Logix BPMS. I realise that automating business processes, like before with the classic spectrum from structured to dynamic / adaptive processes, does did not make sense anymore, because the complexity and myriad of possibilities, like fractal process structures were the real challenge. Forget about classical process definitions and case adaptive case management approaches. Are you ready to implement “perpetum mobile” process definitions with dynamic linkages with anything that exists in the company? Anything can be a medical equipment, a medical record, a digital signature, a medical prescription, a billing invoice, a mobile phone wallet.
