A System for a Self-Managed Organizations

Blog: Collaborative Planning & Social Business

Here is a message from my friend, Robert Gilman, about participating with us on an open source platform for supporting a sociocratic organization.  It is the most interesting thing I have been involved in for years.

Message from the Context Institute

ContextInstituteDo you have or do you know someone who would be willing to use programming skills on an open-source project that could really make a difference for a better world? The project is part of the movement toward effective self management. In a real sense, it is working on a new category of software.

Starting in November of 2014, John Buck (Sociocracy author and trainer), Ian Gilman (software developer) and Robert Gilman (sustainability pioneer and futurist) started on a quest for good integrated software that supports self-management in organizations with distributed decision-making (like Sociocracy and many of the organizations profiled in Reinventing Organizations). We searched for existing software and looked for existing components that might be patched together, but no luck, so we started to build software, now called Weaver, that could serve this need.

We got a big boost in April 2015 when Keith Swenson joined our team of volunteers and brought his existing group-management platform called Cognoscenti. We’ve all been working since to adapt and extend Cognoscenti to the needs of sociocratic and similar groups.

We’ve made considerable progress, enough so that we could really use some additional part-time volunteer programming help. If you, or someone you know, would like to work on this open-source project under Keith’s leadership, using modern technologies like AngularJS and Bootstrap – please contact Robert Gilman.

My Addendum

Some of you are probably already familiar with Cognoscenti as I have been using it for most of my recent demonstrations of collaborative software.  It has advanced tremendously in the last 9 months.  We have added a lot to support meetings, agendas, discussion topics, decisions (not branch nodes!),  proposals, discussion rounds, and making it all work to make group decision making easier and more inclusive.  Also, the entire user interface has been rewritten in Angular.js and Bootstrap.   It is not about automation, it is about facilitating good decisions.  It is all freely available.  If you are interested in groups of people working together, you probably owe it to yourself to take another look.  If you want to help, contact Robert Gilman.  Questions about the software, just make a comment right here.
