A Day of Collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport & Team TIBCO-SVB

Blog: The Tibco Blog

TIBCO places a strong emphasis on the value of teamwork and collaboration. One of the ways TIBCO collaborates is through partnerships with two of the professional sporting teams it sponsors: The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 team as well as Team TIBCO-SVB professional women’s cycling team

In today’s global world, it can be hard for those involved in these partnerships to come together to collaborate face-to-face. All three organizations have people on several different continents working toward the same goal, which is why last month we brought together leaders from TIBCO, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, and Team TIBCO-SVB for a day.

Traveling to Brackley

Members of Team TIBCO-SVB and executives from TIBCO traveled to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 headquarters in Brackley, just outside of London, to meet with key leaders of the F1 team. Visitors were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the factory, where they got to learn just how crucial teamwork and partnerships (including its partnership with TIBCO) are to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.

Behind the scenes in Brackley

TIBCO technology is used throughout the factory, including TIBCO Spotfire and TIBCO Data Science, both used in the digital twin simulator used to test real-world track conditions. While we can’t spill any trade secrets we learned while we were there, we can assure you there’s a lot of collaboration going on long before race day that contributes to all those trackside wins.

For example, we happened to be visiting during race weekend, but the team at the track weren’t the only ones hard at work. While Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, and crew were running practice laps in Russia, an entire team of data scientists was back at headquarters analyzing data from the car in real time in the support room. “Watching the team in the Brackley control room remotely working with Valtteri Bottas after one of his pre-race runs around the track in Sochi reminded me of how we work together at TIBCO across the globe to achieve great results,” said Sharon Mandell, Chief Information Officer at TIBCO.

“The emphasis on ‘team’ was palpable. There were aspects of ‘team’ when it came to results; the team wins and loses as a team, not because of any individual. And there were aspects of ‘team’ when it came to contributing roles; there are the team members we see at the races, on TV, but there are so many roles and people you don’t see that aren’t as obvious, but no less important,” Nelson Petracek, TIBCO Chief Technology Officer said of his experience during the tour. Petracek works closely with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 team to improve performance.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and TEAM TIBCO SVB cycle together

After the tour, some visitors—including TIBCO CEO Dan Streetman, CFO Tom Berquist, and Mandell, along with some professional riders and the coach of Team TIBCO-SVB—joined members of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport cycling team for a ride through the English countryside. “It is always great to see people in person that you otherwise work with remotely,” Michael O’Connell, Chief Analytics Officer at TIBCO explained. “The ride was a little intense, but it was a lot of fun to get out there and meet some of the F1 guys, and some of the Team TIBCO-SVB riders,” he said.

TIBCO sponsors both Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and Team TIBCO-SVB because they are great representations of the values TIBCO stands for. “I love that we sponsor sports that are involved with motion, with movement, which TIBCO is good at. The trip to Brackley was a great analogy for the work that we are doing with these teams and the partnerships we’ve formed,” said O’Connell.
