4 Ways Getting Active Helps to Increase Your Learning

Blog: Good e-Learning Blog

Learning as best you can and increasing your knowledge is an admirable goal, but you shouldn’t forget about giving time to make your body better as well. Everyone knows about the physical benefits of exercise, but there are also several mental benefits of getting active that will jump start your learning and keep you sharp. Your mind is the captain of your body, and it can’t do its job on a ship that isn’t well maintained. It has been mentioned before that exercising can help learning, but here are four of the specific ways that exercising keeps your mind in ship-shape.

1. Focus

You can be the smartest person around, but if you can’t concentrate on your work, you’ll never get anything done. Fortunately, exercise can increase your focus in many ways. It reduces stress and can keep anxiety and depression at bay. At a more basic level, regular physical activity will help you sleep better and keep you rested and energetic.

2. Creativity

Growing your mind often involves finding new and creative ways to solve problems. Maintaining the flow of new ideas going will make sure your learning never stops developing. Studies have found a direct link between exercise and creativity regardless of a person’s mood. Many of the most creative people overcome mental blocks by simply getting up and moving around.

3. Memory

Our knowledge is the accumulation of our memories created throughout our lives. A poor memory is like a bucket with a hole in it, leaking out our hard-earned knowledge. Exercise training increases the size of your hippocampus, the part of your brain responsible for memory cell production. This increase in size prevents memory loss due to age and keeps you mentally sharp through the years.

4. Brain Function

All indirect benefits aside, getting fit just flat out makes your brain work better. Neurogenesis is the creation of new brain cells, and it gets a jump start when you work out. This process increases critical thinking, helps your decision making and nurtures higher thinking. When you kick your body into high gear, your mind will follow.

All Hands on Deck

There’s nothing wrong with throwing yourself into your studies, but it takes a healthy body as well as mind to reach your full potential. You don’t have to start running marathons to get the benefits, either. Start off slow and take the shoe company’s advice: just do it.
