Make Airports Run Smarter and More Efficiently with Collaborative Decision Making
Blog: The Tibco Blog
Airports are a complex business with many defined processes, regulations, and stakeholders. A flight that takes off on time depends on multiple factors such as ground clearance, air traffic control clearance, replenishing food and refueling.
A delay with any of these factors can lead to a domino effect on airport operations. Imagine what the impact would be on a busy airport such as Atlanta, Chicago, or Beijing. Matters become even more challenging in the case of extreme weather or disruptive events. With an ever-increasing number of passengers and flights, operational efficiency has become a big challenge for airports.
To address this problem, a joint venture called Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) was formed. A-CDM is a joint venture between ACI EUROPE, EUROCONTROL, International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO). A-CDM aims to enhance the overall efficiency of airport operations by optimizing the use of resources to improve the predictability of events.
A-CDM solutions enable airport stakeholders (airport operators, airlines, ground handlers, and air traffic controllers, etc.) to exchange timely operational information, and encourage collaboration for efficient management of airport operations.
Overall efficiency and performance of an airport can be achieved by real-time information exchange with all stakeholders, leading to real-time situational awareness for effective decision making. There are several benefits of A-CDM:
- Enhanced Information and status of aircraft in real-time leads to better on-ground aircraft planning
- Runway operations will be better managed by air traffic control
- Optimized capacity planning
- Improved customer experience due to on-time airport operations
- Enhanced Airport Service Quality (ASQ) score
If implemented correctly, A-CDM can lead to many benefits to airports in terms of operational efficiency. At a minimum, CDMs should provide the following capabilities:
- Integrating different airport systems, enabling real-time information exchange
- A real-time dashboard that shows all assets within airports, providing actionable insights
The TIBCO Connected Intelligence Cloud platform enables airports to interconnect a variety of applications and systems on an enterprise scale. TIBCO’s platform allows airports to break down data silos to facilitate real-time information exchange. TIBCO Analytics helps augment intelligence with operational dashboards to represent real-time situational awareness related to all critical airport operations activities, such as baggage handling, gate allocation, terminal views.
See how the TIBCO Connected Intelligence platform provided Melbourne Airport and Aeroporti di Roma with real-time situational awareness. In just 19 weeks, Melbourne Airport went from development all the way through to deployment and handing-off to airport IT. As for Aeroporti di Roma, they improved their airport-wide operations, winning the 2018 Skytrax Award as the “World’s Most Improved Airport”, while also obtaining a high score from the Airport Council International (ACI).
